Get formatting from TM, even is formatting of source segment and target segment is different

As I have to translate UI's in a bilingual manner, with the Source term bold formatted and the target term in parentheses, I always have to add tags in the target segment, which are not present in the source segment

Now I received a job - un update of a very big translation of more than 100000 words - and should add the few new phrases.

I got ttx files and imported them in Studio 2015

The TM I use I can see the tags (for example: drücken Sie auf Cancel (Abbrechen) (with tags around Cancel)

However when preparing the project and pre-translating, the formatting has not been taken from the TM and now all formats formerly added in the target segment and also visible in the TM are disappeared.

What can I do to get the translation together with the formatting?

  • Hi Christine,

Maybe just check the obvious first - apologies if this is simplified - make sure you are showing formatting tags in the Editor. Press Ctrl+Shift+H in the editor view and see whether this toggles the formatting tags on and off.

  • Hi Christine,

I received your email, thank you for the additional explanation.  I'd rather discuss this here as it is interesting and might help others with a similar problem.  First of all I did a quick test with some of your text as follows:

This test proves the principle, so now we need to check a little more about what you are doing.  Where were the original files coming from, were they also TTX?  Is the original TM an upgrade from Trados perhaps?  There must be something different here that you perhaps don't think is relevant, but could well be very relevant.  maybe the video will help to clarify any misunderstanding on my part and you can put me straight about what the problem is?

    Regards

  • I see. The TM is also generated in Workbench/Tageditor 2001 and I receive a tmx file. Usually when I create a project I click on "add TM" and then I choose the TMX file as TM. Then this will be converted in the STudio 2015 format

I intended to copy the screen shot here so you can see in the TM are tags for bold formatting, but with Strg1 I only get the text without the tags. Seems I do not know how to insert a screen shot in this window :(

    Here it is;

    TM:

To access Method Validation report groups, including those specified in saved methods, you must work within a Validation Working project or a Validation Template project

Um auf die Berichtsgruppen <tag>Method Validation<tag> (Methodenvalidierung) einschließlich denen, die in gespeicherten Methoden festgelegt sind, zugreifen zu können, müssen Sie in einem Validierungsarbeitsprojekt oder in einem Validierungsvorlagenprojekt arbeiten.

Another thing to be mentioned: When I get the html.ttx files and the tm in tmx format I always get a lot of different ini files for the different files to be handled. But according to the best of my knowledges these are only to be applied in Tag Editor. I disregard them in Studio 2015

  • It would be interesting to see if it works in Tag Editor, but unfortunately the licence got lost when I updated to Studio and the TM is too big, so I cannot test it
  • I just made also an easy test: I created a small word doc with some English phrases.
I created in Workbench a new tmw and opened the word doc in tag editor. I translated it (with bold formatting of some terms in target segment. I saved and closed
I created a project In studio and added the tmw (will be upgraded), the doc.ttx and the original doc file.
Then batch tasks were done and I opened the two files:
    result was really interesting:
in the docx.sdlxliff file the formatting has not been copied in the target segment (so it was just the problem I always have with the htm.ttx.sdlxliff files
however the docx.ttx.sdlxliff file: all formatting was correct (unfortunately I do not understand this, as in this case it should also work with my htm.ttx.sdlxliff files! - I suppose it is any setting I do not know?
  • Hi Christine,

This explains the problems you are having. Trados does not handle files in the same way as Studio, often using placeholders where there should be tag pairs, adding control characters for diacritics (especially when translating in Word) and probably other things too. Studio does a reasonable job most of the time handling this in TTX form, but if you prepare the file in Studio as a Word file after receiving a TM created in the old Trados (TMX, TXT or TMW) then it's highly likely there will be differences. You are not comparing apples with apples.
