Sharing a Translation Memory: Same LAN.

Hello,

I have Trados Professional and my co-worker has Trados Workgroup. I will be creating and managing translation projects, and he will be reviewing the translations.

Is there a way for us to both be able to access the same translation memory, and for the workgroup user to have access to edit it? Can we store it on a cloud based location?

  • Hi Stephanie,

When you say "Trados" I'm assuming you mean "Studio" and not the old stuff. So on this basis maybe this article will be helpful for you:

  • Dear Paul,
I have read your post about working with shared resources, as I am looking for a way to easily share our TM's with colleagues (we are all using SDL Studio 2017 and TM with fragment search activated). We are mainly working in the same office (actually sharing the TM's in a folder on our corporate server), but when I work from home, access to the shared TM is made through a VPN connection (which causes a serious drop in work speed). We tried the Dropbox option, but the disadvantage of this solution is that two colleagues cannot use one single TM file simultaneously. Do you know any solution that allows several (2 or 3) colleagues to use (read and write) one single shared TM, without speed dropping down...? Thanks a lot for your feedback!

  • Dear Dirk,

Perhaps, if you don't wish to invest in a proper server solution (GroupShare), then you can try the solution I suggested in the article. Use 2 or three TMs but each of you only write to their own. So you read the others but write to one. This avoids some of the complications that can occur when sharing a file-based TM that is really not geared for sharing like this.

The speed issues with the VPN... do you experience these issues with other shared resources and applications when using the VPN. I know I do sometimes and have to turn off the VPN to get improved speeds as this is the bottleneck. But obviously this won't fix your problem, only help identify what really needs to be fixed.

    Regards
