If you add a rule like the one below, the semicolons will be moved to their own segment:

Before the break: enter a period

After the break: enter a semicolon

You would need two rules to achieve this: one for before the pipe character and one for after.

For rule 1, enter:
Before break   \|
After break     .
This will tell Studio that before the break there's a pipe character and after the break there's anything. This means that the pipe character will still be included at the end of your segments, as the break occurs between the pipe and whatever comes after it.

For rule 2, enter:
Before break   .
After break     \|
This will now tell Studio to insert a break between anything and a pipe character.

I'm trying to segment on </br> and I tried as prescribed for the semicolon but it doesn't work :-(

I tried </br> and <\/br>, before break and after break.

It is an xliff file. I also tried in the data type settings, but also in vain. Do you have an idea?

Are you sure you have the string "</br>" present as plain text in the segment and not as tag?
Normally, you should NOT see any such 'tags' in XLIFF as plain text...
If you do, then the XLIFF was incorrectly created in the first place! You should get back to the creator of the XLIFF and ask for correctly structured XLIFF.

Besides, according to your screenshot of Enbedded Content settings, you are trying to create a rule to mark the </br> as placeholder, which a) is unnecessary as this would be achieved by the predefined rule, and b) is probably not what you actually want anyway...
