Excel giving "an error with same key has already been added"

Hi, I received the error in the subject line when trying to SAVE TARGET AS for an Excel file I had translated. From a suggestion in another forum, I recreated a new xliff from the original source file in case there was corruption somewhere. I ran it against the TM and retranslated it. Then, I tried to SAVE TARGET AS again with the new file but it still gives the same error: "an error with same key has already been added"

Any additional suggestions? Thanks!

  • Hi Eve,

SDL has a kb about this for Word Files:
    producthelp.sdl.com/.../6304.html

It sounds plausible, that the issue is similar to yours.
Can you try doing the following:
    1. Open the Excel file in Excel 2013 or above.
    2. Resave the document.
    3. Use the document for translation.
  • Thanks. I should have mentioned that the file was native to Excel 2013 and I did see that suggestion on another forum. Thanks though!
  • Hi Eve,

If you open as a single file project and immediately save target without Pre translating does it work? If it doesn't then you will either need to try a different version of excel or trouble shoot the file by divide and conquer. Just split the file in Excel and test both halves. Then split the one that fails and test again. It's surprisingly fast even with the biggest of files and may help you find the problem part of the file. Even if you don't identify exactly where the problem is you should be able to exclude parts to get the translation out and then finish the file manually.

  • Those are all good ideas. Thanks! I already delivered the file in and it was small(ish) so pasted the translations manually. However, I was curious, so I did go ahead open the original file as a single file project without pre-translating. You are right - it did Save As Target just fine.
However, if I still needed to actually work with the file to get it done, what would the next step be? Use the newly created file that I made when Saved As Target, to now translate from that file? I am just unsure as to what saving out the original file as a single project with no pretranslation gets me - what would I do next to actually be able to translate the file and then save out the actual translated file in Excel format? Also, I do appreciate knowing about the the divide and conquer technique. Thanks!

    Pretranslate from your TM.
