Merging segments in a mqxlz file

Question

Hello Community. I'm working on mqxlz files generated by a MemoQ-using colleague from InDesign files. I'm using Studio 2015 SR2. 
 I am unable to merge segments (greyed out) except for cases where the second segment contains just a closing inverted comma. 
 Is there a solution? 
 Many thanks for any advice offered.

Hello David, 
 These are all paragraph segments. Your problem is that the xliff file presents these segments as paragraph segments in Studio. So you have this: 
 
 To be able to merge them you would need to see this: 
 
 As I said, Studio 2017 will allow you to do this technically but I'd be very interested to see what this would look like when the file gets back to memoQ. I can test this for you if you can send me the original source file to test in a memoQ -> Studio 2017 -> memoQ workflow.

 We are doing this for Transit projects for several years now. Previously I edited the source, merging paragraphs this way "virtually". In target I entered a double space then. This way there were no meaningful entries in TM, as the broken segments have been translated to spaces. I do not remember now, if MemoQ did accept these segments to update the TM, but I think it was so. 
 Now, since Studio 2017 is around for testing, I used segment merging instead. This leaves the merged segments empty. And in MemoQ it does result in empty segments, which are reported as MemoQ cannot update the TM with these segments. So in MemoQ I do split them manually back to what they were before or just leave empty - depends on what happens with the file next. But in the end of the day the process works perfectly both ways.

Hi David, 
 Apologies for not getting back to you. This won't help you much unless you have Studio 2017 as you cannot merge across these segments in any other version of Studio. However, in memoq you'll see this: 
 
 So you end up with an empty segment. This may or may not be desirable... depends on the source file I suppose. I can't tell how good the final target file was as I get a file containing placeholders... probably needs you to check this, or your client.

It sounds as though the segments are probably cross paragraph boundaries. You cannot merge across paragraph boundaries in Studio 2015 and earlier. You can in Studio 2017, but even here some things need to be handled with care depending on the source file.

Interesting... can you provide a screenshot in Studio? Would be curious is this was a paragraph in the source, but by the time you ran it through memoQ and then Studio you end up with paragraph boundaries in the xliff. I'd almost bet on it ;-)
