Do I have to go through Termbase Wizard every time when I start to translate a new file or project?

I am a very beginner with SDL Trados.

I worked on three short word files. I clicked Translate Single Document to get started>open Document>create New File-based translation Memory, under General, Create From: (I followed the YouTube tutoring to leave here empty) Name: I put a name.  Description: I leave here empty . Location:  the same folder where I saved my source. Source Language: English (United States). Target Language Chinese (Simplified, China) ,under Fields and Setting >I just click Next> under language Resource I just click finish. Before I started to translate I go to Project Setting under Termbases , create New File-based Termbase. Then finished the Termbase Wizard and added New Terms   I finished the fist file and saved it.

My question:

1 When I followed the same step to translate the second file , why the repetitive parts I translated and saved in the first file didn’t show in Term Recognition and termbase search ?

  2. Why are Translation Memories for the second and third file I saved empty?

  3. Do I have to go through Termbase Wizard every time when I start to translate new file ? That is what I don’t believe so because it is not convenient and fast for translating at all.  Otherwise I am not allowed to add new term.

  • Hi Yaqi,

The second time you went through the translation process did you do this?

    1. Open single document
    2. Add Translation Memory
    3. Add Termbase

So, did you add the resources you created the first time or did you create new ones all over again?  It sounds as though your created new ones and if you did this it means they will be empty each time you start.  You onoy need to create these resources once, and after that you add the same ones to your projects.

If you add them to your default settings then every time you start a project they will already be selected and all you have to do is open the file and start translating.

    Regards

  • Hello Paul,
Thank you so much for your help. I am really just starting out and I really appreciate your input. I applied what you said and it helped substantially, instead of creating new file based Translation Memories and Termbase I added to the resource i have created but I am still struggling with a couple of issues. 1. The Termbase still shows No result available for the receptive parts i saved but there is red line above the terms in source which means i added the term. When i clicked Show Translation on the tool bar it shows the translation. Based on the YouTube tutoring, the terms or the receptive parts of translation should pop up to the segments. Is that right? 2. How to keep the same font with source if some segments don't need to be translated? (file>Option>Editor>Font Adaptation>Language and Font) I changed to En(United State) Font :AriaL which is the source Font but the translation font is still SimSun. 3. The Chinese Font I often use is Minliu , same as i did with English I changed Chinese Font as Minliu but it comes out SimSum.

If you see the red line then it almost certainly means you are looking in the term search window and not the term recognition window.  If you don't see two windows here then click on View -> Reset Window Layout

No that's not right.  Results from the Translation Memory can be automated to pop up in the segments.  If you want termbase hits to show up you have to insert them.  These are usually words or phrases and you have to place them into the appropriate part of the translation.  You can do this using Ctrl+Shift+L or just start typing and AutoSuggest will bring them up.

This setting is just the font that is shown in the Editor, not the final document.  I wasn't sure what you meant here, so best to make sure we understand this first.  Next, any setting you make here can be overridden by the fonts in the document if a specific font is set rather than the default styles for the file.  However, you can force what you want if you change the setting for the formatting to "Show all tags but do not show formatting" for example:
