Fragment recall very unsatisfactory

Can anyone explain this? To test the fragment recall, I used this text:

"A potent function. Fragment recall is a very potent function. Let us try fragment recall during translation. We want to try translation as quickly as possible. We will work as quickly as possible to achieve a good result. The result should be satisfactory. Anything can be satisfactory."

Studio could only find ONE fragment here, namely "fragment recall" and that was from a previous try. "Align new content automatically" is checked, and the TM has been aligned. And of course, Fragment Matches was selected as a source for AutoSuggest.

  • Hi Mats - it would be useful to have more information so as to be able to comment:
    * How much content did the TM have?
    * Did the content include many of the significant words from the test text, e.g. 'potent', 'function', 'quickly' etc.?
    * What was the project target language?
    * What fragment search settings were you using? (Project settings->language pairs->all language pairs->Translation Memory->Search) i.e. was 'TU fragment' checked, and what were the minima values?

  • The TM is just above 10,000 TUs. But I don't see the point of the second question: I thought that once a segment containing e.g. "potent function" had been saved to the TM, that phrase would be immediately available for fragment recall; similarly with all the other recurring phrases. Have I misunderstood? The target language (again, I fail to see how this matters) is Swedish.

Settings: All language pairs. I have to admit, though, that I had missed checking "TU fragment" under Segment Matching Options. Maybe that was it... although in an earlier try with the same TM and the same settings, I did get a couple of fragment matches (but far from all that I was expecting) also without this setting.

    Regards,
    Mats
  • I'll be glad to explain why the content of the TM is relevant, as is the target language ... I can do so either in a slightly abstract way using examples from a different language pair, or by using your exact source text and TM, if you're happy to provide the TM (as email to kflanagan@sdl.com) and the translations you entered for the source text while editing. Of course I'd treat the TM content as confidential but understand if you can't provide it just the same ... Let me know. Meantime, it would be great to know if you got different results once you'd checked the 'TU fragment' checkbox, because that is very important. (Personally I think it should be checked by default ...)
