Merging of the server based TMs.

I ask you fellow Groupshare users to help me with the merging of the server based TMs.

There is a function in Studio 2015 called "Upgrade translation memories", which allows users to merge several local TMs and then publish them on the GS (Groupshare server), however if the user wants to merge TMs that are already on the sever it only gives you the option to add sever based TMs from studio 2009.

The question is - how do you merge TMs that were created in Studio 2015 and sit on the GS server. Can you do it through the GS server interface?

  • Thank you for your suggestion, Walter. The thing is that the intention of our company is to migrate all the local TMs that we have to the GS server (server based TMs are much more secure and flexible). We have thousands of TMs and some of them contain millions of translation units, which would mean that each time we would like to merge something big we would need to use a huge computing power, which is not an option on the office PCs. We have bought powerful server equipment to handle that, that is why I want to know if there is any way to do it on the server itself without local export?

To my knowledge, there is no function to merge server-based TMs directly on the server.

i understand your concern about the workload on the client, on the other hand please also keep in mind that merging these "thousands" of TMs is more or less a "one-time project". Once you have your multilingual TMs on the server (and I guess there will not be thousands of them anymore) you won't have this problem anymore. Also consider that in order to move you currently local TMs to the server, you need to import them anyway, which means that with a good planning about which local TMs you are going to import into which consolidated server-based TM, the added effort due to merging will not be substantial anymore. You need to import all your thousands of local TMs anyway! The import itself however can be done directly on the server (as opposed to importing from within Studio).
