Google API in Studio 2022

Hello, I have purchased Studio 2022 and would like to add a Google MT API. Where can I do that? In Studio 2019, that option was available when I chose a TM for a project:

Thanks

  • This was removed from the product in 2021.  The solution would be to use one of the apps that provide MT via the Google API.  However, as you may have noted from the messages at the top of the page we are still experiencing difficulties with our servers for the AppStore so yo cannot use this for the time being.

You could use Language Weaver as part of the Cloud Resources available to you.  Possibly not as good for your language pair with the generic engines, but perhaps useful for the time being?

  • Thank you very much for answering my question Paul.

I guess the best thing to do is to wait until the issue with the AppStore is resolved. I will also try using Language Weaver.

  • Hello Paul,

It's been a few months since I asked about MT. Studio has been updated since then and I would be happy to know if the option of using my Google API via an app is available. I would also like to know how I can use the Language Weaver app after installing it.

    Thanks.

I would be happy to know if the option of using my Google API via an app is available.

It is, you can find it in the private appstore.  As you use 2021 you should check your configuration as described in this wiki:  (Missing Wiki Page)

You can also find it directly through the web frontend: https://appstore.rws.com/plugin/19/

I would also like to know how I can use the Language Weaver app after installing it.

It's the same as any MT provider.  Just sign in an use it. There is a wiki though so read that for additional info:  Language Weaver

It has changed a little since the wiki was written but there is enough information to help you make sense of it.  If not, then feel free to come back with a less broad question and explain what it is you specifically need help with.

  • Hi Paul,

Thank you very much for the prompt reply.

I use Studio 2022; is there any difference when it comes to Google API and the Language Weaver app?

  • Well, you have to pay to use Google; it’s harder to setup in the Google Cloud Console; Google supports more language pairs.

But why don’t you try them both if you have questions? I certainly can’t comment wrt quality of MT for your language pair.

  • Hi Paul,

I have an account I'm paying for, and I have a Google API key. What I want to do is try out MT with Studio 2022.

I have already installed the LW app several times, but I don't know how to actually integrate it into my projects. I would also like to know how to use Google API.

    Thanks

  • Just install the plugins and then do exactly what you did in 2019. It won’t say Google, it’ll say MT Enhanced as this is the name of the plugin.

  • Hi Paul,

I've installed ModernMT, which you've mentioned in one of your answers.

In order to add Google (or MT Enhanced), which of the following options should I click?

Trados Studio screenshot showing a list of translation memory and machine translation options including ModernMT Adaptive Neural Machine Translation selected at the bottom.

None of them, you haven't installed it.  It's called "MT Enhanced", so look for that in the appstore and install it first.

I would also say you don't need Language Weaver Edge at all,and you also seem to have some duplication there so remove all the plugins you installed related to Language Weaver Edge.  That is an on-premise solution and probably financially unviable for most freelance translators.

In fact if I was you I'd remove every single plugin I have installed from these locations and then only reinstall the ones I wanted using the integrated appstore:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Trados\Trados Studio\17\Plugins
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Trados\Trados Studio\17\Plugins
    c:\ProgramData\Trados\Trados Studio\17\Plugins

So go to those locations, delete everything inside the Plugins folders.  In Studio, for example, I can filter by typing the name of the plugin and find it like this:

Trados AppStore interface showing a search for 'mt' with one result, 'MT Enhanced for Trados Studio' plugin by Trados AppStore Team, ready to install.

Then I can install it from here too and it will appear like this after restarting Studio:

Trados Studio plugin selection menu with 'MT Enhanced Trados Plugin' highlighted among other translation memory and machine translation providers.

    Then configure in here:

MT Enhanced plugin settings window with options to select 'Google Translator' as the MT Provider, 'V2 - Basic Translation' as the API version, and a field to enter the Google Translate API Key. A warning icon indicates an issue with 'Translation Provider Settings'.

    1. select Google as the provider
    2. select the version of the API you wish to work with (probably V2 in your case)
    3. enter your API key
    4. set up any of the options you wish to work with

    That's it.
