Multiterm 2017 no longer working after major crash of Studio

Hello all,

I have Studio and Multiterm 2017 latest updates and everything worked like a train.

But 2 days ago Studio crashed out of the blue, and since then:

-Multiterm in the Editor does not show terms or not all the terms

-No more autosuggest, so typing is now twice as slow for me

-At first after opening the Editor I can add terms, but after half an hour get the error message: Multiterm is unable to add the term

I have Windows 10.0 makersupdate. I noticed that the Java Control Panel has no tab 'Updates'.

I was wondering is this a Java problem or should I maybe reinstall MultiTerm?

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi

First of all, open MultiTerm and allow it to update to the latest version (if you don't have this function set to perform automatically on startup, go to Help > Update.

Then, please try running a Windows Repair of MultiTerm - and then of Studio - via Control Panel.

    1. Close all SDL applications.
    2. Open the Control Panel:
      • Windows Vista/7Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
      • Windows 8: Right-click on the screen at bottom-left corner and choose Control Panel > Uninstall a Program.
      • Windows 10: Right-click on Start > Control Panel > Select View by: Small Icons > Programs and Features.
    3. Click/highlight the relevant SDL product from the list (e.g. SDL Trados MultiTerm 2017 SR1 Desktop) and click Repair.
    4. Restart Studio/MultiTerm.
I actually repair all 4 components of MultiTerm periodically - Desktop, Core, Convert and Word Integration. Then I repair Studio. It's worth the time it takes, especially after a Windows automatic update.

Also, do you know how to reorganise a termbase? Studio and MultiTerm normally prompt for this if it's required when the affected termbase is in use. Periodically reorganising helps the termbase run more smoothly.

This is done by opening the termbase in MultiTerm, click on Termbase Management bottom left then select Reorganise in the top toolbar. Click through the Wizard (OK > Next > Finish > Close) then close MultiTerm

If none of the above helps, then a reset of both MultiTerm and Studio (after trying the above Windows Repair of both) might also help:

Navigate via Windows Explorer to the folder shown below and rename the folder 'MultiTerm14' - anything, add 'old' for example, doesn't matter...

    C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL MultiTerm
You may need to make hidden folders visible first, which is done on the View tab of Windows Explorer:
Windows Explorer window showing the SDL MultiTerm folder with subfolders and files including MultiTerm1, MultiTerm2, and VersionManager.xml.
Once you've renamed the MultiTerm14 folder, restart MultiTerm 2017 and open a termbase and the folder you've renamed will be recreated. You can delete the old one.
    C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0

    Delete the following 3 files:
    BaseSettings.xml
    Plugincache.xml
    UserSettings.xml

Then open Studio. The folders will be recreated when you close Studio and have recustomised your settings. I know this bit is a pain but it's good to go through the settings and tweak them now and then to make sure you have it set up to the optimum for whatever you are doing. Also to be sure Studio hasn't got reset to default by a Windows update or whatever.

If you're still experiencing problems, you can go deeper in the resetting, as follows:

C:\Users\[User_Name]\AppData\Local\SDL - rename the SDL Trados Studio and ProjectApi folder
C:\Users\[User_Name]\AppData\Roaming\SDL - rename the SDL Trados Studio and ProjectApi folder
C:\Users\[User_Name]\Documents\Studio [VERSION] - rename the Studio [VERSION folder to Studio [VERSION]_Old

Then open Studio and all the above folders will be recreated as default.
    Hope this helps,
    All the best,
    Alison

  • Just a note: it seems that under Windows 10, Repair is no longer an option for MultiTerm 2017 when you pull it up under Programs and Features.
  • It seems that if you don't update to Creators Update you have a non-working system. But doing a clean install is lesser work than you think. I did it because I bought my laptop second hand and all in all it was not so much work. The settings on a daily base pass by one by one while you work and then it just takes a minute or 2 per setting. Also, make a list of your personal settings such as prefered view in Explorer, etc. before you do the clean install. Good luck!
  • I've already tried uninstalling and re-installing Studio/MultiTerm, that didn't help.

And there's nothing wrong as such with my system, everything runs as expected, there is no malware etc, and except for the Creators Update, all updates install normally and there is loads of space. And with all due respect, you have no idea about what software I run and how long it takes me to a) install it and b) get it set up the way I need it. It takes me a week. Getting the segmentation rules I need in Studio set up alone will take me 45 minutes because I can't export them. So just to make things convenient for Microsoft, I'm disinclined to waste that much time on something unnecessary - I'd happily go without the blasted Creators Update (a thousand things nobody ever asked for...) but you can't turn off the Updates on Windows 10 Home (that's a mistake I won't make again, getting home over Pro but then when I got this machine I was in a hurry because my old mother board had literally melted and I had to pick from what the shop had).
  • Ok I hear you ... Maybe ask on other forums or the MS forum for ideas to update Creator without clean install. Good luck!
  • Hi ,

Regarding "Just a note: it seems that under Windows 10, Repair is no longer an option for MultiTerm 2017 when you pull it up under Programs and Features."

Windows Repair of my SDL MultiTerm 2017 components is available on my Windows 10:

Control Panel window showing a list of installed programs including SDL MultiTerm 2017 with a 'Repair' option available.

    Also on the right-click menu...

    Ali :)

EDIT: I have now read the posts following the one I replied to. The last Microsoft Creators' Update didn't stop me being able to use Windows Repair...

  • Hi Alison

Ok so it seems that Microsoft is increasingly hiding the classic control panel behind layer of Mickey Mouse UI. I eventually was able to find a path to it by using the Windows key + Pause button > Control Panel Home at the top right. Then I get the old UI which offers repair. If MT is still misbehaving today, I'll try the repair function.

  • Hi ,

Have you by any chance got your display set to Tablet mode? If so, turning that off will make a difference. My UI is totally accessible, I don't use Tablet mode even on my Tablet PC.

You can check the above by clicking the Notifications icon bottom right of your screen. If Tablet mode is highlighted, its tile will be green. Click on it to turn it off.

It is also adjustable via 'All Settings' (also accessible via the Notifications icon) and you can choose how and when (if ever) you want your PC to switch to/from Tablet mode, here:

Windows Settings screen showing Tablet mode options with 'Hide app icons on the taskbar in tablet mode' and 'Automatically hide the taskbar in tablet mode' toggled on.

If that's not it, then it must be another setting affecting your UI because you should be able to choose whatever way you wish your UI to be displayed... Plus if you're having problems with the Windows updater, via All Settings > Update... > Troubleshooter you can run through the various possibilities of why your updates aren't working correctly. There's also a Help link there too.

Sounds as if you maybe need help from Windows support as well as SDL installation support (which I suggested in your other post)...

    All the best!

  • Hi ,

Ah, well, it would have been convenient if that were all it was!

Maybe you have had an update that I haven't had because I'm able to use Control panel by simply typing 'Control Panel' in the Search line next to the Windows icon/start button. I can open it up and display it in one of three different ways as always. I know Microsoft stagger their upgrades, they don't all happen at the same time.

There's a discussion about this on the following page:

Windows 10 update took away Control Panel

However, nothing has changed for me. Control Panel certainly isn't on the list generated by right-clicking the start button but that's not the way I access it anyway.

When I do get there, it looks exactly as I expect it to look. I'd be interested to see a screen of what apparently replaces it.

Till then, I'm clueless as to how to help you...

    Ali :)
