I've literally spent hours reading up on the Multilingual XML file type and XPath queries. The best I can come up with for filling in the Language Mapping > Languages Root field is this, but it doesn't work:

Thanks to you both, Jesús Prieto and Paul! I knew Paul's post already – otherwise I would never have come that far ... ;-) However, the very first things I tried were these two, both with and without the query in the Languages Root, and both with and without leading backslashes. All these options net the same result: I get German text on both editor sides, although there clearly is an English translation for every segment.
About Paul's post: Pretty much all the links in there are broken, so you can't get any further from it.

I haven't tried to test this as I don't want to type out the file, but looking at what you have done I think you need the root from your first example, and the languages from your second. The root is there to help the filetype know where to find the languages. So if you don't specify the full path up to the location of the languages then this won't work.
So try these:

But I'm happy to share the file if you have time to play with it! Let's see if that is possible here.
Before we do that please try to create a project with your filetype, and also import the target language using the appropriate batch task. The preview will only show you the source and never the target as there is no mechanism in the preview to import content other than the source.

I had tried creating a project, but I wasn't aware of the "Import Multilingual Translations (XML)" batch task – I presume that is what you mean, right? So I was delighted and expected that to do the trick, but instead it shows a funny error message (of course I've doublechecked I have the right file type). So I'm afraid you'll be hearing from me in private ...
That message suggests that your problem could be that you are not actually using the Multilingual XML filetype in the first place. Are you 100% sure that the filetype being used for your project is the right one?
What does it say here after you create your project?
