"Merge Segments" function does not work in my Studio 2017. It's always greyed-out

No matter what I'd do, I don't get "Merge Segments" to work. In the picture below, you can see I already check and uncheck all boxes as recommended in order for this feature to work. However, it DOES NOT work. What am I missing? Needless to say, I have created and recreated projects with this feature to no avail. Any advice? Thanks.

  • Hi Eugene,

It looks as though you have not selected two segments to merge... you have merely selected the text in two segments. If you use the mouse you need to select segment #144 by clicking on the number in the left column, then hold down the ctrl key and select #145. Now both segments should be visibly selected across their length. Now you can merge.

Clicking on the numbers! But what I've read all over is "Select the text of each segment with Shift+Ctrl+Down and then right click on the segment number and then you will click on Merge Segments..." never worked. Thanks, Paul. You always got a solution, to the point.
  • Hi Eugene,

Glad this worked, but I'd be interested where you read the description you shared. I hope it wasn't in our own documentation and would like to get it corrected if this is the case?

    Regards

  • I can't merge two segments even though everything is set as it should be: In Project Settings -> Project, Allow source editing is selected and Disable merging segments across paragraphs is deselected. I select the two segments clicking on their number in the left column, so they become yello. Still, Ctrl +Alt+ S doens't merge them. Is there any other setting missing or the feature just doesn't work?
  • Hi ,

If, instead of using 'Ctrl+Alt+S', you right-click on one of the number cells you have selected (without clicking anywhere else first), a dropdown menu will appear.

If in that menu, the entry 'Merge segments' is greyed out (as in the image in the original post) then there is some reason why it is not possible to merge the segments. If they are both highlighted correctly as described above by Paul, then there must be something in the original document formatting that makes merging impossible, such as a page break for example.

There could also be an element in the original document that has not been included in the sdlxliff because it is not recognised, an unusual icon or image format for example. You may find the reason if you check the context of the texts you are trying to merge in the original document.

It is also possible that an element of the original document has been marked as untranslatable by the conversion process to sdlxliff, according the filetype settings - this happens for example in html/xml-based work with embedded content that must not be changed and there are various reasons why this should be so.

I know I haven't given you a solution here, just wanted you to know that sometimes content cannot be merged because of the way the original source document is compiled.

    All the best,

    Alison :)

  • Dear Alison,

You did help! I didn't know about right-clicking on one of the number cells selected to display the dropdown menu rather than using Ctrl+Alt+S.

The entry Merge Segment was NOT greyed out so I was able to merge the two segments.

    Very much appreciated.

  • Hi ,

Yaaay! I'm really pleased that this sorted your problem out :)

    All the best,

    Ali :))

  • PS: When you right-click and Merge Segment is not greyed out, what appears after that as the shortcut on the dropdown menu? Ctrl+Alt+S appears on mine, as in the image in the original post. Pressing these 3 keys together also works to merge segments for me. Maybe this shortcut has somehow been 'turned off' in your setup.

If you want to reset it you may be able to do so via File > Options > Keyboard shortcuts

If not, maybe running a Windows repair on Studio will sort it out, as follows:

    1. Close all SDL applications.
    2. Open the Control Panel:
      • Windows Vista/7Start > Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
      • Windows 8: Right-click on the screen at bottom-left corner and choose Control Panel > Uninstall a Program.
      • Windows 10: Right-click on Start > Control Panel > Select View by: Small Icons > Programs and Features.
    3. Click/highlight the relevant SDL product from the list (e.g. SDL Trados Studio 2017) and click Repair.
    4. Restart Studio.

    Copied from SDL Support's site.

    All the best

    Ali

  • Ali,

Really appreciate the time you spent on this. The shortcut which appears is Ctrl+Alt+S, it is in the Keyboard shortcut, and I just verified that pressing these 3 keys together works to merge the segments.

But what is maddening is that this feature appears to act randomly or at least it needs to be triggered a few times. I experimented several times with the same file (every time on a fresh copy) and Ctrl+Alt+S was greyed out, but after I went through the procedure (Allow Source edting etc.) a couple times, it worked. Also, it doesn't look you need to select the two consecutive segments, it's enough to select only the first of the two segments to merge. But not always.

Overall, not a consistently reliable feature. You shouldn't need to spend a couple minutes with several tries to merge two segments.

    Thanks again for your insights

    Roberto
  • I guess it's all rather related to too-long pressing the Alt key, which activates that damned ribbon action keys (or what is its name)... and not actually the merging feature acting erratically.
  • Hi Roberto,

If you like AutoHotkey, Paul shared a nifty little script for segment merging that is a great time-saver. All you have to do is press Ctrl+M. You'll find it here:
