Keyboard shortcuts not working

SDL Trados Studio 2017 - for some unknown reason almost all my keyboard shortcuts (default) have stopped working. Has anyone encountered the same problem and know of a solution?

Hello Margus Enno ,

Not one I've come across before... maybe try a reset? Rename this folder (just add _old to the end or something, it's not important what you rename it to) and restart Studio:

c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\14.0.0.0

Thanks Paul. Tried this - no result. This solution only seems to reset the layout of Studio. I can see all the relevant shortcuts being defined just nicely in the options, but they still don't work.

Jerzy, how vast an array of settings does the reset affect?

That seems like the wrong solution (although I have no doubt that it would work).

If this is a project-level problem - and that's OBVIOUSLY what it is - then we'll learn a lot more by figuring out what's actually wrong than (to use the analogy) reinstalling windows. Even a project-level reset would be a better solution than a scorched-earth policy global reset to solve a key-stroke failure issue.

If it affects only projects or works randomly, there is no doubt for me something is generally wrong with your settings. So the reset is IMO the only way to deal with those. The reset will usually not even change the shortcuts - these are set within your user profile. TBH I do not even remember what is really affected by the reset - not that much in fact.
And if a reset like described above does not help, resetting the user profile to default and setting keyboard shortcuts and the rest will help. This is more or less similar to what happens in Word, when the Normal.dot(m) goes nuts. To avoid such problems it is always advisable to keep a fresh copy of your profile on backup.

As far as I can tell, it happens in ONE PROJECT. I really only mention it to suggest that I don't think, in this case, it's an extra-Trados thing (as Paul thought way back when), and that I don't think it's even a Trados-wide thing.
And I repeat - I'm sure your suggestion would work. But it seems to avoid searching for the cause. It would seem preferable to search for, find, and fix the cause with understanding.

Having this only in one project is strange, as no shortcut settings are kept within projects. Maybe these are only specific settings for merging segments or editing source, which do not work?

You'd think so. But it's a general failure of cntl-z. Not sure whether there are other key-combinations that aren't working, but that one's noticeable.

I hadn't been following this thread too closely because the title suggests a general problem with all the shortcuts, but the comment above caught my eye, because I've been seeing the same thing. I can't pinpoint exactly when it started happening, but Ctrl-Z stops responding for me as well. It's not all the time and I can't really say that it's project-specific, but it's definitely happening. Closing and restarting Studio usually solves the problem... until it happens again. I think even if it's not affecting everybody this is something that's worth bringing up with support. I've checked and Ctrl-Z continues to work as expected in other programs even after it stops working in Studio.

And just to clarify, that's the only shortcut that's stopped working in my case, everything else works as expected, as far as I can tell.

Hi John,

I Googled this and came upon something that may be worth exploring, although in my case I'm not sure it will make much difference. Users of other programs who have reported Ctrl+Z has stopped working have solved the problem by either:

1. Finding other programs that may have Ctrl+Z set as a shortcut for something else and may be hijacking the shortcut (I saw reports about both Skype and Winamp). In this case, changing the conflicting shortcut to something else solved the problem and reclaimed the Undo functionality for Ctrl+Z. I have to keep a close eye on this issue if it arises again and see if I've launched any software that may have such a conflict.

2. For users with keyboard layouts that may have a different key mapped to the usual location of the Z key, where the problem was triggered by inadvertently shifting keyboard layouts by pressing Alt+Shift, the solution was disabling the Alt+Shift or Control+Shift keyboard layout switching shortcut in the Control Panel. (Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region\Language\Advanced settings - Change language bar hotkeys).

In your case does the shortcut also start working again if you restart Studio?

PS: One other thing I've been seeing is that even though I have disabled the Insert key via AHK to prevent me from accidentally switching Overwrite mode on, Overwrite does occasionally become active in Studio, seemingly on its own. Again, restarting the program resets things back to normal.
