Trados blocks or crashes at specific segments and does not recognize terms any more

Hi,

Each time I get to specific segments, Trados blocks. The first time I get a message saying Trados does not work anymore and that I will get a message when there is a solution. When I open Trados again, go back to this segment and save it, Trados blocks. I have to end the task in the Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and open Trados again. Alternatively Trados just closes automatically when I enter this segment. It happens each time, so I have to skip those segments if I want to continue working.

It happened after translating a while in different texts (once segment 28+29, once 76+77 and 87+88).

MultiTerm does not recognize all the terms, allthough they are in the glossary. When I want to enter those unrecognized terms to MultiTerm, it says the entry already exists. Now, half an hour later, it does not recognize any terms anymore. I deleted the Termbase and added it again without result. The screenshot shows Termbase Search, but that was only at that moment, I do use Term Recognition.

I wanted to update, but it says the version is up to date. Restarting the computer does not help. I'm using Windows 10. Sorry for adding two themes at a time, but I thought there might be a connection.

  • Thanks for sending me the termbase.  So far I could not see any specific problems with this termbse, although I did note a couple of things you could try changing and see whether it helps as MultiTerm has been known to have problems in this area in the past:

    1. remove the accented characters in the termbase file name.  So change the ý to a y for example.
    2. do the same in the "friendly name" in the termbase definition.  So under Termbase Management -> Definition -> Edit and then in Step 2 of the wizard.

    I can't say this will fix everything, but it's worth trying.

    Also make sure that your termbase is not connected to an external drive, or in a folder where it gets synched in real-time with somewhere such as OneDrive or Dropbox.  These sort of mechanisms can cause problems because fundamentally the termbase is only a Microsoft Access database and it's not designed to cope with these sort of requirements.

    If you also have a file where you can reproduce the problem of Trados hanging when working with this termbase then that would also be really useful.  If I can reproduce the problem then we can more easily identify what's causing it.

    I will send it to you. I would really like to know what causes the problem. Trados crashing or freezing with files has happened before but I always thought it was because of the TM (oten very large) not the TB...

    So far so good. It might have helped: so far it has not crashed. I used a simple renaming trick in the past, without paying attention to the punctuation marks though and it helped too (for some time). Thanks.
