Is it possible to update a translation from a reviewed file halfway through the translation?

Hi everyone,

I'm working on a large file and have been asked by the client to send batches of text to them for proofing every day. I exported a bilingual review file from Trados Studio 2017 and sent them that. I added a comment column to this file. The client has proofed this file and sent it back with tracked changes. But when I try to update the main sdlxliff file (the one I'm working on in editor) the tracked changes don't appear. In fact none of their changes or comments appear. Am I doing something wrong? Is it perhaps because there are still untranslated segments?

    Does your file import? Or do you get an error message, which is what I would suppose in that case? I would really be surprised if your file would have imported back...

    I do get an error message telling me there are multiple paragraphs in one segment. That's all.

    Hi ,

    Two things to look at. First, make sure you have no hard breaks in the file you are trying to import back in. Next, If the reviewer adds hard returns and then later on removes the hard returns Word still leaves the underlying code in the file (see this video for clarity on that statement).

    Studio looks at the underlying XML and sees the breaks and subsequently fails to import the review. Importing with the external tool, SDLXLIFF Converter for Microsoft Office often solves the problem as this seems to be less picky than Studio. You can find this in the Navigation menu of Studio in the Welcome View.

    But if you're getting such a message, my experience says, that nothing is then imported.
    Modifying the exported file in any way excerpt applying text-only changes to the target column renders this file unusable from my experience. It is (or at least was) even enough to open this file in a Word version prior to Word 2007 to stop the import process.
    So this is why I'm wondering your file got imported. But if it did NOT get imported, I could think about a solution. Obviously this would import the file without tracked changes, as the changes need to be accepted in Word before the import starts, but still the changes would apply.

    The first time I imported the file no changes appeared and I got errors. I then removed hard line breaks and the next import had 71 warnings and somehow displayed some of the text from the comments column of the review file in the target segments of the sdlxliff file. I've just tried pasting the tracked changed target column from the review file into the original review file I sent the client. When I try to use this I got a 'problem when merging content of segment' error.
    To be honest I think I'm just going to cut and paste from the review file into editor because I need to crack on with this job. But thanks for your assistance!

    Hi Paul, As you can see from my reply to Jerzy below, I've tried your recommendation and I'm still getting an error. This time 'problem when merging content of segment'. I think I'll give up on this now but will look into this more once this job is over because the functionality is very useful.

    The error is most probably "when merging segment content of segment 1".
    The file exported from Studio hates any kind of manipulation, including opening in anything else than Word 2007 or newer. The newer the better, but if you open in Word 2016 and change the "compatibility" in the Word options, this may break back conversion too.
    In a nutshell - I use this process this way:
    Export the file for bilingual review.
    Open it, select the two leading columns completely. Switch OFF the track changes function. Set these two columns to the language of the source and select NO CHECKING from the corresponding menu in Word.
    Now select the target column, apply the target language and swithc the checking for this column ON.
    Switch on track changes, save the file.
    Advise anyone who has to deal with this file NOT to change ANYTHING else than text in the target column. There may be NO format changes, no applying of other languages, no such changes. Only the text in the target column may be edited. Adding any kind of breaks is forbidden. Moving or removing tags is forbidden, using tag formatting to type anything is also not allowed. If these points are observed, you can import the file with no problems.
    Should the file NOT import:
    Accept or reject changes in the reviewed file as necessary, save in a separate location.
    Export a fresh file for bilingual review. Open this file in Word. Switch off track changes.
    Open the previously reviewed file in Word. Copy there the content of the target column by selecting it from the first to last segment. DO NOT SELECT AND COPY the column heading (the first cell in this column). Go to the new export file, click in the FIRST segment (NOT the column heading) and paste the copied text. Save the file.
    This file will import, provided you used Word 2007 or newer.
