Can't do an embedded preview of any Word file

Hi all,

I can't do an embedded preview of any Word file, not even the simplest, single-sentence one. The error message is "An error was encountered while previewing the file. Please check your MS Office installation".

My (genuine) MS Office (2016 Professional) installation seems perfectly fine. What might be the problem?

  • Hi

This issue was fixed in CU8 released last year. I have the later updates installed on mine but it still works. FYI I tested with SR1 14.1.10011. 20356. I hope this helps.

    Thanks,
    Naoko

  • Thanks for the response. I wish it was fixed, because it certainly doesn't seem to be on my end. I have the exact same build as you. Yesterday the function somehow started magically working - with any project. Today it won't work again - also with any project, despite restarting the application and the PC. Same error as before. I could try reinstalling Office, but I want to get on this hassle only after trying everything else.

Any further help, please? This was one of the reasons I even bought this thing in place of MemoQ, and now it's disappointing me from the very beginning… Though I do realize it might be yet another issue with a Microsoft product.

EDIT: the external ("Microsoft Word") real-time preview does work.

  • Hello ,

As you stated it worked yesterday but not today- was this actually a different or the same project?...single file translation or maybe a package.
It sounds increasingly as if there are certain setting that need twekaing in Studio maybe.
Further to Naoko's reply and you are sure you have the lastest updates installed...
maybe take a look at the following article from Emma Goldsmith in regards to settings- this is equally applicable to 2017 as well.

    Does this help?

  • I tried with the same projects and some other ones, nothing worked (whereas yesterday everything worked). I tried the solution from your link (elevating the priority of the file type [sounds like a strange bit of software engineering anyway]), but didn't help.

I obviously have the latest build. I just purchased and downloaded the software on Friday and did all the updates straight away.

I'm currently working with the external preview function, which in itself wouldn't be bad if not for the fact that the yellow highlight indicating the position in the document is acting up - it often blinks oddly, marks and unmarks text, or disappears entirely and reappears after switching a segment. Not sure if this is a separate issue, but it gives one hell of a bad impression as to Trados's stability.

MemoQ's HTML preview was useless, but at least worked every time. Much like the preview in Trados 2011.

  • May I count here on substantial support from someone knowledgeable from SDL eventually, or should I rather make some sort of a support ticket? Because this problem is crucial to me and one I can't give up on easily.

Also, today I tried to do the embedded preview yet again (with a single-word Word file), and a Word file with the following content appeared:

    "SEGSTART:1ecab52b-5dac-4bfd-8011-cda125e4342e:1asdasdSEGEND:1ecab52b-5dac-4bfd-8011-cda125e4342e:1"

When I do the "Microsoft Word" type external preview, everything is normal.

Other times the error message mentioned in the OP appears, and that's it. So the behavior isn't even really reproducible.

Should I attempt to reinstall Office? If so, is there anything specific I should pay attention to?
  • Hi ,

It used to be the case that the click to run installer from Office 365 did not provide all the "hooks" we need for the embedded preview to work correctly. So in these cases the recommendation was to use the HTML preview or the View In preview. Please try again but do not touch the embedded preview option at all before trying the others. Just switch the drop down to one of the others and see what happens.

I did think this was still the case and only a full professional installation using the MSI installer would allow the embedded preview to work but I confess I'm a bit confused at the moment as I seem to have the click to run version of 365 myself and it works!

If you can get anything to work at all then please do log a case. If you don't have a support contract then for installation issues that prevent you from working we have a route for all customers to get help. This can be achieved really quickly using this link:

    gateway.sdl.com/liveagentlicensing

    You have two options:

    1. Submit a case using a webform
    2. Use live chat to get a licence reset

You want to use the first option and make sure that you refer to this thread so the teams can see what you have tried already.
