HELP: Translating mixed-source language files

Hi everybody, I need help, I cannot figure out, how to set AnyTM for translating mixed-source language files (it is a first for me).

I followed everything I found on the help file of Studio https://docs.sdl.com/LiveContent/content/en-US/SDL%20Trados%20Studio%20Help-v4/GUID-1C72CF89-FDEE-4B76-B420-C08D486B3223

My problem is here:

  • 3. Select the Lookup and Update checkboxes of all the TMs. This will ensure that all the TMs will be updated (but only with the segments in the matching source language).
  • 4. Select OK to save your settings.
  • 5. Go to the Advanced tab, and select Mixed-source language translation to activate mixed-source language editing for this project.

On step 4, after clicking OK "Project Settings" is closed.

WHERE is this Advanced tab mentioned in Step 5 to select Mixed-source language translation? Even if I reopen project settings I cannot find any Advanced tab.

Obviously I am doing something wrong.

Can somebody help me?

Thank you and regards

Angelo

  • Hi Angelo,

I mean that the box I've highlighted here has to be ticked:

Screenshot of Trados Studio interface showing the Editor view with a highlighted checkbox for 'Mixed source language translation' in the project settings.

It's just occurred to me, I had to drag the top line of the Mixed source language translation section upwards for that box to be visible so maybe you can't see it.

If that's the case then I don't know what is wrong as the box is ticked by default... Can you see it on your setup?

    All the best

    Ali

PS when I click into the next segment, the language changes automatically for me:

Close-up of Trados Studio project settings with a list of source languages including English (United States), English (United Kingdom), and German (Germany) with the 'Auto-detect segment source language' option checked.

  • Hi again Angelo,

In my PS, I meant that the Segment source language dropdown changes to the language of the segment my cursor is in.

Also, I was able to add all the languages by clicking 'Auto-detect all' but it was a very simple document created to test AnyTM out to check if it works for me.

    Have a good evening

  • Hi again Ali,

well, that does not wok in my case. I tried the Auto-detect all, but I got very strange languages (Africaans ???), and most of all it recognized English US instead of English UK. But it detected correctly German CH. So I deleted everything but German CH and put manually English UK.

With Auto-detect segment source language ticked, Studio does not recognize correctly all the segments. Therefore I unticked it.

With Auto-detect segment source language unticked I should be able to set one language to all selected segments (help file of Studio says so: As you move through the file, you will notice that AnyTM automatically adjusts the Segment source language drop down box to match the actual source language of the current segment. This selection determines which TMs are used for lookups and updates. You can also control the drop down box manually by clearing the Auto-detect segment source language checkbox.)

Example: I set English to segments 2-6.

Trados Studio screenshot showing incorrect language detection with 'Africaans' and 'English US' instead of 'English UK', and correct 'German CH'.

    And German to segments 7-11

Trados Studio interface with 'Auto-detect segment source language' unchecked and manual language setting for segments.

When I go back to the English segment (2), now it turned German

Trados Studio displaying a segment incorrectly labeled as 'German' after setting it to 'English'. Possible software bug.

Eather I am doing something completely wrong or there is a bug here. I will contact support.

Thank you for your help and have a good day.

    Angelo

  • Hi Angelo,

'Auto-detect all' doesn't always work but once you have added the correct languages you require, with 'Auto-detect source language' ticked you shouldn't need to set any language to any segment, the auto-detect should do that automatically.

If that's not happening, it definitely sounds as if you need help from support - BTW, if you have a support contract, it's always a good idea to contact support as soon as you have a problem, in case there's nobody visiting the forums who can help... ;-))

You have a good day too!

    Ali :)
