I receive an error message when trying to open the translated word file in the format I saved it in.

Dear Trados Natives,

I would be so grateful if there was someone who could help me once again...

When I saved my final translation from Trados into the target word format it seemed to work. However, when I try to open this file I receive this message (in German...):

I'm not sure, what I have done wrong?! And then the difficulty becomes greater because when I try to look at the preview of the document with the "Print & View" option, the document is in a terrible format and half is missing!?! So I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here either!

This might be related to the version of office you have. Can you tell us what version of Studio you are using, which Word filetype was used in Studio and which version of Microsoft Office you have?

It's quite likely that your customer won't have a problem with the file if they have a recent version of office... but better to get the answers to the firtst set of questions above. I can also test this theory if you are able to send me the Word file? If you want to do this send it to me at pfilkin@sdl.com

Hi Paul,
Thanks for your quick response! I'm using Studio 2017, it was a Microsoft docx file and I'm using Windows 7 because I had to install a separate "VMware Workstation" on my computer to run my Studio 2017 version on it (It's along story, but I can't explain it very well because I don't really understand it - had a technician here help me out). And I had to install a different Windows version then what's running on my actual machine (which is Windows 2010). Does that make any sense to you?

So far it's in line with my theory... you didn't confirm your version of office though, the one you try to open the target file with and the one installed alongside Studio in your VM?

The one I use to open the file with is Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010, but I don't think there is no Microsoft Office package actually installed on the Virtual Workstation. In fact, when I look at it, it seems as if the original file I translated was saved as an "Office Open xml document". If that tells you something...?!

based on this information I would be interested to see whether the file gives me a problem or not if you can share it? If you processed the file in Studio 2017 using the new ML word filetype then it is likely that your problem is related to you having an old version of office.

Hi Paul,
I'll send you the file, but actually I think you're absolutely right. Because there is no Microsoft Office on the virtual machine, the files that I put in the shared folder are originally docx files but can only be read as "Office Open xml" files there. I cannot send you the file in that format because when I put it back into the shared file, it's seen as a docx file again. And because I have no contact with the internet when I'm in the the Virtual Workstation (that was the reason I had to create it, to be able to run Studio 2017 on my "university" laptop) I cannot send it to you in that version... Do you have an idea as to what I could do now?

Yes, I'm sorry to be so confusing! Well, the original file that I need to translate is a docx file. When I place this file in the shared folder and then look at it in my workstation, it is an "Office Open xml" file. This is the file that I then opened and worked on in Trados. However, when I save this translated file once again it is saved as an "Office Open xml" file. When I look at this "finished" file in my workstation it is only half there and in a very strange format.
When I try to look at this file (finished file), it looks as if I could open it, as it is saved as an docx file, but this is the moment I get that error message and cannot open it.
Does that make a bit more sense?
But perhaps we should continue this tomorrow...?

Office OpenXML format is just another name for standard Office formats.
It's just you confused by the names appearing in Windows Explorer - Office formats are known to vanilla Windows (without Office installed) as generic "Office OpenXML"... and when Office gets installed, it registers its formats under more detailed names, so the file type names appearing in Windows Explorer change.
If Microsoft wouldn't be stupidly hiding the file extensions by default, you would see that the file has still the DOCX extension. Just turn on displaying file extensions and you will see.

BTW, you don't need any virtual machine to run Studio 2017 on Windows 10... is that technician who told you that probably some inexperienced youngster?

Hi Evzen,
Actually it won't run on my computer without the Virtual machine, because I wasn't allowed to download a freelance license on my work computer, because when I tried I received the message that it wasn't possible on my computer as it belonged to a network or something like that. This was the only way to circumvent the problem.

But my problem with not being able to read my translated files continues. While trying out a reduced version of the pdf file that I needed to translate - I "retranslated" it and was then able to open and read what I had saved. When I now try it again with a larger pdf "portion" it gives me the error message again (see first entry of this question). What happened now?!?!
