Strange behaviour of Step One in the project creation wizard

I have some questions with regard to Step One.

1. No matter how I start a new project, I cannot produce a Step One window with the Step One legend and the explanation below. What I get is this:

Does this mean that I only get the One Step legend the very first time I use this function and then never again? If so, it's very confusing.

2. How does the Autofill function work? It is not explained in the Help, and I get the same result here the next time I start a new project whether I have selected this box or not.

3. As you can see, I get an error message here saying that the file I have specified for translation is not translatable. Apart from this being wrong, what is really strange is that it was handled as translatable at first, but when I backed from step 2 or 3 to step 1 again, the detection of its usage was suddenly changed to not translatable. (I get the same result no matter how many translatable files I have added.)

I should add that this does not always happen, but it has done so more than once, in a haphazard way. (Of course it should never happen.)

4. For some reason, every time I start a new project, the step/station 3, Translation Resources, is aways ticked off in green. This seems to be a remnant from a previously created project. How come?

5. I have created (as an example) the Location Path D:\Jobb\Project 3. Under that folder I have also created sub-folders Prov and Nytt prov. However, in the file structure there is an additional folder level inserted between Project 3 and these sub-folders, namely "en-US" (obviously related to the source language selected). This is confusing. Why does it happen?

5. The Help says that I can add files as follows: "Drag files into the Files in Selected Folder list on the bottom right-hand side of the One Step wizard page." One: This is not possible for files that are to be translated; two: there is no "Selected Folder list on the bottom right-hand side of the One Step wizard page". (I have also commented on this on the Help page in question.)

    Hi, Mats,
    That message is indeed a false positive, especially if Studio has already accepted a translatable file. The AutoFill feature, when ticked, makes the name of the folder (where the project will reside) exactly the same as your project name. I usually untick this box so I can name that folder however I want. However, this AutoFill feature produces sometimes another false positive message and, yes, you also get stuck there. Basically, the specified location folder DOES NOT contain some files (!). There is more: that "location folder" has not even been created yet.

    Information dialog box in Trados Studio with a message: The specified project location folder already contains some files. Please specify an empty or non-existing folder.

     

    In general, I believe there is some incorrect internal programming logic in this step 1 of the "Create New Project" form. Apparently, this type of message is triggered when you decide to change source and/or target languages. To avoid getting stuck just make any language changes first, before naming the project, assigning its location and adding files.     Thanks for your info. I was indeed notified of Ozzie's reply; for some reason I missed it. And I have ticked all relevant (i.e. 95%) of the boxes you mention in the thread. But I am still not notified of my own postings -- is that by design? (I do it very seldom so I can say for certain that the three postings I made during the last three months or so did not appear in my emails.)

    I believe its by default that you do not get notified of your own posts.
    You can however always check yourself by clicking on your own ID and then activity.

    Please give me the exact steps you go through to get this Mats.  I see this occasionally but I can't reproduce it at will and I didn't make a note of how I caused it at the time as I was usually doing something else, so I just started again.

    On your question... no, it does not mean you only get to use this once.  It means something is not working right for you.

    There was so much debate over this during the Beta I'm surprised you didn't see it!  It's quite simple though... if you have it checked then no matter where you browse to for the project location the project name will always be replicated to the end of the path as you type it.  So the project name is autofilled!

    That's a bug in my opinion.  I actually went through this with the development manager this week.  It seems to be related to your project template, so if you have something in there it will trigger that stage in the workflow to be ticked.  But there are some odd behaviours around this so it will be looked at.

    I have no idea.  Detailed steps to follow please so I can reproduce what you have created.

    I don't know where you are looking but I have this ability.  The blank wizard looks like this:

    Trados Studio 'Create a New Project' window with an arrow pointing to an empty 'Files in Selected Folder' list.

    I drag some files for translation in there and it looks like this:

    Trados Studio 'Create a New Project' window with files for translation dropped into the 'Files in Selected Folder' list, indicated by an arrow and text.

    Have I misunderstood your question?

  • Thank you very much, Paul, for taking the time to provide such detailed answers! Here are my comments/replies:

    1. I get the same result – i.e. no One Step header nor the explanatory text below – regardless of whether I start the wizard by dragging a file to the Welcome view, doing File > New > New project, pressing Ctrl+N or selecting the New Project icon.

    2. I missed the discussion on Autofill (I have to admit to not being the careful reader of the Beta group that I should be), but Ozzie already replied. (Did you see his description of an error which seems to sometimes occur to him, but which I so far have not encountered?) Anyway, I believe a description in the Help would not hurt.

    3. It is not a repeat of question one. But it has been answered by Ozzie and Stefan Krause. It is an error or at least a problem which should be addressed. It is this: If you change a language after adding a file for translation, you get the error message shown in the image: “The project must include at least one translatable file.” This is not totally illogical: it seems the file was already prepared using the previous language combination. But it means you must scrap the project and start anew. And if you don’t realise why the error occurred, you may make the same “mistake” all over again.

    I believe that either some kind of warning should be included (in the Help at least), or – preferably – the program should be amended to take care of these cases.

    4. This bug has now disappeared. I know not why, of course.

    5. My question seems to have been caused by my taking a look in the file structure before the project was created – at that stage, only the source file folder was there. Later of course, the whole usual file structure was there.

    However, there is another problem which I have discovered: If I add a subfolder below the project folder/file, so that (in an example) an “en-US” folder contains not only source files but a sub-folder with other source files, these latter files will not open in Studio – only the ones directly under the “en-US” folder (in this case) can be processed. This is a serious problem because it means that the option of adding sub-folders is not only useless but misleading. (But I have to say I don’t see when I would find such an option useful.)

    5 (again). Not your misunderstanding but totally my own of the phrase “bottom right-hand side” and not noticing that there is in fact a legend “Files in Selected Folder" even if it is not placed at the bottom nor even to the right… I’m sorry that you had to spend time unnecessarily on that.

    Finally, I notice that when I add a source file via the Add files function, I can observe the creation process via a progress bar. If I just drag a file to the Files in Selected Folder, it is immediately placed there without any observable processing – but still useable. Strange.
  • I have since heard an answer to question 1, namely that this is by intention: the header and the text below is no longer shown after you have opened this page 4 or 5 times. Which is OK, of course!
