How to change the 5 initial languages in Studio 2019 without uninstalling it?

Hi,

I need to change the initial 5 languages of Studio 2019. Is there any way to do it without uninstalling Studio?

I tried repairing Studio but it always starts as usual, without asking for the languages.

Kind regards

Sandor

  • Hi

Running a Windows Repair of Studio 2019 should create a clean version that prompts you to enter your 5 languages again. Maybe rebooting your system before opening Studio again might help.

If that doesn't work then reinstalling is the answer. There is no other way I'm afraid.

    All the best,

    Alison

  • Hi Alison,
I've already tried resetting Studio, repairing Studio, installing SR1, uninstalling and reinstalling SR1, uninstalling Studio using Revo Uninstaller Pro (also removing traces of the installation), with rebooting the system before opening Studio again. To no avail. No prompt for the 5 languages. I remember it worked with previous versions.
Now I cannot start an important project.

  • Hi Alison,
I have not upgraded to Studio Professional.
I've tried repairing my Studio 2017 installation in the meantime. No prompt for the languages either. Unbelievable. It worked before.

  • Hi

Another scenario that would not require the 5 languages prompt is if you have Studio installed as a Trial version.

The Trial version always installs as the Professional version, until the trial period runs out or you activate a Freelance or Freelance Plus license.

When working with the Trial/Professional version, you can change the Source and/or Target languages on the first page of the Project Creation Wizard. Click on the dropdown next to the language that appears on the right-hand section of the window.

    Does this help?

If you're unable to resolve this and you do only have the Freelance version then you need installation help.

You can get free help very quickly here:

    SDL Installation Help

Fill out the form, remembering to select 'Installation' at the 'Case Type' dropdown menu AND to give your email address accurately so that they can contact you to resolve the issue.

    All the best,

    Alison

  • Hi

What languages are available to you in Studio once it restarts? That would be the first thing to check. If it's the same five you had before then we know you still have the FL version at least.

So the next step would be to try this:

    1. Return your licence
    2. Uninstall through the Control Panel (don't use Revo)
    3. Delete these folders if they still exist:

    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\15\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\15.0.0.0\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\15\
    c:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\15.0.0.0\
    c:\ProgramData\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\15\
    c:\ProgramData\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio15\
    c:\Program Files (x86)\SDL\SDL Trados Studio\Studio15\

    Now reinstall Studio 2019 SR1.

  • Hi Paul,

    I followed your steps.

Now still no prompt for the languages. And all my previous configuration is lost. Now changing the Color Scheme makes no difference (I cannot set my preferred dark grey any more; the white color scheme is always displayed).

So much pain with Studio for years. I cannot believe it.

  • Hi

I think you should log a support case and have the support team look at this problem for you. This can be achieved really quickly using this link:

    gateway.sdl.com/liveagentlicensing

    You have two options:

    1. Submit a case using a webform
    2. Use live chat to get a licence reset

You want to use the first option and make sure that you refer to this thread so the teams can see what you have tried already.

    Regards

    Paul

  • Hi Paul,

I tried to uninstall/reinstall Studio again. To no avail. Moreover, the activation code was requested again, so now I have two activations despite the fact I use only one instance of Studio.

I will log a support case...

    Thanks for your help.

  • Hi

When Support have found a solution, would you kindly share it with us in a post on this thread? I'm very interested to know how this could be happening.

    All the best,

    Alison

  • Hey Paul, let's say I have the freelance version and initially added 5 languages. Let's say I want to replace one language that I never used - is this possible? I assume not. Would a re-installation of the program help in that case?
  • Hi

As indicated in my first post in this thread, running a Windows Repair of SDL Trados Studio should be enough to reset Studio so that next time you open Studio you will be prompted to add 5 languages again.

If that doesn't work (which until now has been rare) then reinstalling Studio normally resets Studio so that you have to add 5 languages again.

    All the best,

    Alison

  • Hi Alison,

Support reset the languages quickly without uninstalling/reinstalling Studio, by editing the registry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\LDSRClient15 was renamed to LDSRClient15.old).

The expert said probably something was hanging when I originally tried to reinstall Studio.

    Kind regards

  • Hi

Thank you, that's useful to know. I'll make a note of that for future searchers.

I'm so glad they were able to resolve your issue so simply!

    All the best,

    Ali :)

  • PS:

    Hi

Do you think that in future we can tell folk who haven't been able to change their 5 languages via reinstallation or repair, that they can use the method given to Sandor by the Help Team?

In other words, by editing the registry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\LDSRClient15 was renamed to LDSRClient15.old)

Or should we not be advising folk to amend their registry...? Maybe that's a step too far into reset territory?

    Ali

  • Hi!

I followed these instructions carefully with some online explanations and it all worked well! (Never thought about being able to edit the registry). Thanks a lot!

  • Hi

You're welcome! I'm very glad to hear that this worked for you!

    All the best

    Ali :)

  • What a performance. Maybe the designers of Studio could reconsider this. When I installed the Freelance version, I chose French and UK and US English. Then I had to choose two other languages (Tagalog or Arapaho or something, I don't remember) just to continue the installation. User friendly it ain't :-)
  • Hi

Studio's user-friendliness depends on your perspective. At the other end of the spectrum, I recall a user complaining because he couldn't add a 6th language. As it turns out, he had added 2 variants of one language, UK and US English and you only need one of them to be able to use all other variants. Thus he added just UK English, which gave him another language allowed.

I know what you mean, though. It would be easier if Studio Freelance could be set up with just the two or three languages one user needs. However, as normally the entry of the languages only happens on installation, reset or reinstallation and it only takes a second or two more to select another language, it's not that much of an inconvenience in my book. I've actually found it useful as I can run a quick machine translation on something in a different language that I don't normally use, just to get an idea of what it means.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy using Studio and MultiTerm as much as I do, and have for many years!

    All the best,

    Ali :)

  • The point here is something else... something what was already discussed few years ago, but still wasn't fixed, apparently.

Back in Trados, this dialog in question asked to select up to five languages... while in Studio you have to select precisely five languages.
    Feel the (user unfriendly) difference?

Adding more to the issue, the fact that only the "main" languages are significant (i.e. English-US means automatically all other flavors of English) is not taken in account in the "precisely five languages" requirement.

  • Exactly. I don't see why the user should have to install languages that he/she does not know and will never use in order to proceed with the installation. Also, logically, one would expect the languages to depend on the project, not the original installation.

The original, decades-old, idea behind the number five was that up to five languages should be enough for majority of common freelance translators, i.e. excluding multilingual superheroes. Plus, since the idea is decades-old, the number of supported languages at that time was way lower... definitely there weren't dozens of flavors of the same main language.

So, the Trados Freelance allowed to select up to five languages which the translator expected to use in the variety of his/her projects... which did make sense and worked quite well at that time.

    Hi Evzen, hi

I understand, it would be so much easier for the user if they only needed to add the languages they wanted to use. I don't know why Studio is set like that but it has been so ever since SDL Trados Studio was first created. Maybe the programmers found it easier to do everything in 5's throughout the program for some reason. I know less than nothing about computer programming...

Regarding the above quote, Evzen, do you mean that if someone adds 4 variants of one language plus one other language, then Studio should issue a warning that only one variant is required per language group?

    All the best,
    Ali
