Studio SR2 update 15.2.4.1693

I am using Studio SR2 version 15.2.0.1041. Studio "Notifications" is telling me upgrade version SR2 15.2.4.1693 is available and it even looked as if Studio was downloading it. But where to?

And I cannot find it in my SDL Account under Downloads and can't seem to find it on my PC.

Anyone any ideas, please?

Simon

  • Hi

If this is what you see:

Trados Studio interface with an orange notification bell icon indicating 1 notification and a green 'Sign In' button.

Click on the orange bell tab then on the green Install button:

Trados Studio notification dropdown showing an available update for SDL Trados Studio 2019 SR2 version 15.2.4.1617 with an 'Install' button.

Don't worry about the version numbers, mine are different because I have a beta version installed.

If you don't see the above, click on the Help tab then on 'Check for Updates'

If there are no updates visible then you have probably already successfully installed the update.

I hope it's this simple for you...

  • Hi Alison,

Thanks for rapid reply. This is essentially what I did. My problem is two-fold.

Firstly, it did not install, I am still on 1041.

Secondly, I want to download the SR2 update file to a specific location on my PC so that I can install from a local copy. That's because, partly it's quicker to install, partly because I have more control, and lastly because the forthcoming termination of Windows 7 support  means I am soon to be forced to by a new PC and start all over again. When I do that, I want to be able to install my software from latest versions of installation files, rather than trawl the internet for updates to everything.

Is there a way to download it to my chosen location to install? As I said, I can't find it in My Account.

    Simon

  • Hi

Yes, you can download it manually. Take a look here:

Cumulative Updates for SDL Trados Studio 2019 SR2

You'll find at the bottom of the article instructions on how to download and install the patch manually, with an active FTP link, user name and password.

I hope this achieves what you are looking for.

BTW you don't necessarily have to buy a new PC, it should be possible to replace Windows 7 with Windows 10 on your existing one unless it's very low spec... That's what I did* and it worked like a dream.

    All the best,

*PS, actually I didn't do it, a local IT firm did it for me.

  • Hi again Alison

I think we are at cross-purposes. The SR2 update does not appear to be a CU, but a file of 384 MB, in other words the 'whole 9 yards'. Essentially the same size as the original SR2 download in my account (394MB). Clicking 'Check for Updates' tells me this file is available using the notification panel, rather than a dialog box in centre screen.

As regards PC, how old was yours when you replaced W7? Mine will be 5 years old at Christmas. Spec is Intel i7 4790K 4.00GHz, 16GB RAM, with 250GB SSD + 2TB HDD. Although I am still delighted with its performance, advice I am receiving is that latest W10 might not run optimally on 5-year old architecture. SO how do I know what's best?

Plus, to install W10 I will have to format my SSD, install W10 and then install all software again. If my PC 'dies' in a couple of years, I'll have to do it all again and it's a real pain. This way I can achieve both end results with one quantity of pain inflicted. Anyway, my Office suite is OEM, so I would have to buy a new version and install it. This way the PC supplier installs W10 and Office for me.

    Yours, lost, Simon

  • Hi

The zip file that the shortcut I gave you downloads is named SDLTradosStudio2019_SR2_CU4_1693.zip

That is indeed "upgrade version SR2 15.2.4.1693" as you requested in your original post. Compare the numbers.

A cumulative update is usually a big file, it's not just a simple update.

My PC was at least 5 years old, but it was years ago so I don't recall precisely. Actually, it was so long ago that it was XP-based. I went to my local friendly IT company and asked for advice on buying a new PC and they suggested that I upgrade the one I already had to Windows 8 which I then upgraded to Windows 10 when it came out. I seem to recall them saying Windows 10 was more economical with space at the time. They sold me a much cheaper laptop to work on while they upgraded my PC for me and saved me lots of money. It had Win8 installed, which I also updated to Win10 when that came out.

The IT company transferred everything to my new computer for me, it was easy.

Earlier this year, I reinstalled Windows 10 on my laptop as it was getting slow. I asked someone with more IT knowledge than I how to do it, they told me and I found it easier than I'd expected. You can find instructions online, too. I wouldn't be afraid to do it again. It's working much better since I reinstalled.

I now have a backup system for my recently-purchased new main PC (I fried my old one otherwise it would still be going strong) that backs it up to a secondary hard drive, my stepson set this up as it was beyond me. It wasn't expensive to achieve.

I use the 365 subscription version of Office which is kept up to date with the new version and can have it on up to 5 machines for £79 a year. It comes with 1TB of storage too. I pay yearly because that way I get 2 free months. It works well.

I hope some of this helps.

    All the best,

    Hi again

Secondly, the second image I posted in my first post was indeed of the notification panel as you describe. It was a snapshot of the top right corner of my Studio interface. Here's the full screen:

Screenshot of Trados Studio interface showing the notification panel on the top right corner with a message 'A new file version is available'.

    Does this make sense now?

  • Thanks for insights into your PC Windows upgrade saga. Interesting. I already backup daily to an external 2TB USB3 HDD. For info, I would be paying £230 for Office 2019 or £95 pa for 365 (less 10% if I pay annually, I imagine). So paying up front for Office 2019 would break even after 2½-3 years and I'm in profit after that.

I have downloaded the CU4 file (1693) and I'll install it later when I finish for the day.

Regarding W10, I believe it may also still be possible to get hold of the free W10 upgrade that Microsoft we offering everyone a couple of years ago. I wonder if I might try that once I have a new W10 PC set up. By the way, timing is such that I expect my new PC to see me through to retirement!

    Best, Simon

  • Hi again

    You're welcome!

All the best with your update and eventually with W10. I love it BTW.

  • @

Stop dreaming, Simon! The free W10 upgrade MICROSOFT was pushing so hard two or even three years ago has been dead for many months now, you will have to buy it (same for me!).
