I'm wondering why you even need to rationalise this?  I never even give this a moments thought.  I avoid many problems by always working from within Studio and this means that whatever Windows thinks is completely irrelevant for me.

Perhaps you can explain why this is important for you?

Not so complicated to be explained.

Yesterday I created my first SDL project with Studio 2021 (It took some time, as I had no personal 2021 template and had to build one). This *.sdlproj file as well as all three related SDL folders are saved in an SDL sub-folder inside a job-dedicated folder (It has been my way of working for 10 or 15 years and I feel comfortable with it).

If, within this job-dedicated folder in Windows Explorer, I left-click on my *.sdlproj file (a process which makes sense), it opens Sudio 2019 (See why in my first post)... which of course does not find my project! Is this good enough a reason for me to worry about the file type-app associations (apart from wondering why the described mess with the SDL file types)?

Normally running a repair on 2021 would resolve this problem.  If it doesn't then we should probably raise a support ticket for you.

I use a different approach, which I think I'd use even if I was working operationally with the software.  Your folder approach is fine, but I would navigate through my folders with a different software and copy the links to the projects so I could open them in Studio quickly using the Studio menus.  This way I never have any problems with file associations because they are no longer relevant, but I could still work the way you are.  Using better file navigation/management software carries a lot of benefits which you'd never get in Studio alone or in Windows Explorer.

How to? In 15 years, from SDLX to Studio 2019, I never had to repair any of your CAT tools. Will this repair affect my current projects or templates?

What are you thinking of?

Windows control panel. As you have so many versions of the same software running a repair should fix the file associations.

Better file management software... my preference is for Total Commander.

You may imagine it had crossed my mind. And you should know better, as I remember it being mentioned at least once or twice in other threads: one might hope of repairing Studio in the Windows control panel through "Modify", but the button is greyed and the only option left is "Uninstall".

We must think of something else, e.g. recovering the file association possibilities we had with Windows 7 (A newer piece of software is not always better in all fields than the older one).

I wonder if you are thinking that "Windows Control Panel" is the same as "Add/Remove Programs" which it is not.  So perhaps you are looking at this:

Where it is greyed out.  Instead of using the "Windows Control Panel" where it is not:

If you click on this, after the warning about allowing a change to take place, you will get this:

Choose "Repair".

Press your Windows key and type "Control Panel" without the quotes.  You will find it.

Sorry for the confusion between two different Windows windows!

If I repair the way you say, will it interfere with my current projects ans templates?

I repaired my Studio 2021 as advised, I did not lose any project or template but, as it was to be expected, nothing changed among the file type-app associations: so, when I click in Windows Explorer on an *.sdlproj or *.sdlxliff file created with Studio 2021, because these file types are still associated with the older CAT tool, it opens Studio 2019, which obviously cannot find the requested file.

At the end of the day, it is a MICROSOFT problem, since the only option Windows 10 leaves you is to search in... MICROSOFT Store, where there is no chance of finding any of your CAT tools. But, as the MS support people do not work late at night or during weekends like you, Paul, I will have to wait until tomorrow.

I didn't expect this.  The most comment fix fr this problem is to run a repair on the version you want to default to and this should enforce the filetype association.

Thank you for pointing me to your KB 2461. You  know that even before reading it through I had already tried Solution #1, to no avail.

As my OS in in French, I dared not tamper with my registry, so I decided to try Solution #3. Just to be safe, I backed up my project and template folders, but strangely enough it proved unnecessary. And no problem with CCleaner: I own it and use it almost daily. Result: situation totally unchanged, identical to the one descibed in detail in my very first post.

The problem is that in the file type-app association page your CAT tool is named just "SDL Trados Studio", no version mentioned, only the icon tells you if it is 2019 or 2021.

If the MS support people do not show me a way of concentrating all the associations on Studio 2021, will I have to kill Studio 2019 for good?
