Strange mouse scrolling behaviour in Studio 2021 concordance window

I've been using SDL Trados Studio 2021 for a few weeks now and I found this strange mouse scrolling behaviour in concordance windows. When I want to check if a term has already been translated, I use a key combination to look it up in concordance. And when I click inside concordance window (no matter source or target results), scrolling doesn't work. I have to click again in another window so works, i.e. if I clicked in the left windows, I have to click again in the right window and vice versa. This issue doesn't occur in Studio 2019 so I guess it's not a hardware problem. Does anybody know what might be the reason?

  • Hello  ,

There was a similar issue mentioned here (which has been logged as a bug for fixing in a future CU)

    https://community.sdl.com/product-groups/translationproductivity/f/studio/30780/sdl-trados-2021-freelance---bug-while-working-with-concordance-search-box

However, I have just tried to replicate the scrolling issue without success.

Could you perhaps record the action - this way we can see the exact issue and update as necessary.

This is a simple (and free) tool for recording the screen (if you don't already have a different tool)

  • Yes, of course. Thanks Steven. Please check the attached sample. Screenshot of Trados Studio software showing a bilingual translation comparison. The source text in English and the target text in Polish are displayed side by side with a 100% match highlighted..

  • Hello ,

Thanks for this- unfortunately I'm unable to reproduce using normal F3 concordance search.

Perhaps its worth resetting Windows layout

Trados Studio screenshot showing the 'View' tab with an arrow pointing to 'Reset Window Layout' option in the dropdown menu.

and then testing once again using F3

Its also worth looking at the key combination that you are using as this could be conflicting with something else.

  • Thank you, Steven. I will check it and see if I notice any regularity in this behaviour.

  • Hi. I checked it again connecting different mice and keyboards. Nothing changes so it's not a hardware issue. But I noticed the following behaviour. When I open Concordance window, enter the text to search manually and press Enter, I can put the mouse cursor inside source or target column and scroll it easily. But when I look up a word using a key combination and the results are displayed, I had to click the mouse in any column (source or target) first - then the searched word in the left upper corner is highlighted for a second. Then I had to click the mouse again in the other column (different from the one I clicked earlier) and now I am able to scroll the results. Studio settings are identical as in versions 2019 and 2017 where this problem does not occur, so I would say it's Studio 2021 fault.

  • I would say it's Studio 2021 fault.

It may be that something has changed in Studo that prevents your mouse driver from working.  But it doesn't affect all computers... for example:

I can't reproduce this behaviour either.  I think it's possible that there could also be something in the specific mouse driver you are using that doesn't like whatever changes we have made in Studio, and unfortunately that doesn't mean the Studio development team will spend time trying to reproduce and correct that problem for you.  This would have to be a problem that affected all or a significant number of users for this to happen.

Have you tried checking to make sure your mouse drivers are all up to date?

I'd be interested to know if anyone else does have this problem?

  • Hi Paul! Could you tell me what mouse do you use please? I am using Logitech Marathon m705 but I can't scroll it as you do in none of Trados versions I have. I checked this mouse on 2 PCs and it behaves in the same way. I also checked another mouse (Asus) but nothing changes.

  • Hello  ,

Perhaps its worth checking that everything is up-to-date /OS/drivers etc.

This often resolves issues that cant be reliably replicated.

  • I use this one:

Nothing special as I prefer to use the keyboard if I can... so just opted for a comfortable fit.

  • Thank you. I think I solved this problem. Apparently the thing is related to a scroll wheel and focus of the mouse pointer in OS. When the focus follows the pointer, you don't have to click anywhere and you can scroll anything that allows scrolling (lists, pages, columns, etc.) - it's enough to hover your mouse pointer on a given area. This is probably enabled in Windows 10, but not in older Windows versions. So I found an application that does it instead of OS (I have Win 7). I am not sure if it is allowed to give it's name here, but if it is, I can do it. I've been testing it just for a few hours now but it looks like it's working fine.
