  • Nice work... although I'm pretty sure all users will have received an email on this by now.  Just to help those who didn't see it the essence of the email was this:

    NEW Studio 2022 pre-launch landing page – trados.com/studio2022

NEW infographic – What’s coming in Studio 2022

NEW eBook – Going places with Trados

    NEW FAQs – Studio 2022 pre-launch

Plus the usual links to Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

So, does anyone know "what's new in the upcoming Trados Freelance 2022

The infographic gives a very high level idea, but just to add my own thoughts after reading many of the carping comments in that ProZ thread:

    • 220+ customer requested amendments is a fluffy way to describe the bugs and enhancements that have been resolved and added to this release.  There has been an enormous focus from the product teams on robustness and reliability which in my opinion is something to be happy about.  I have personally always thought a release that did nothing more than focus on this aspect would be worth having.  Funny how it gets received by some as a cynical way to add features that RWS alone want.
    • various font features that enhance user experience... something many users have been asking about for a long time.  I'm also really pleased to see this too.
    • additional filetypes... always welcome. Some users complain they don't like Passolo... the addition of software localization formats to Trados Studio is brilliant!
    • the revamping of the views provided opportunities for the team to include solutions for many of the requests we see in the ideas site as well as working more smoothly between desktop and the cloud.  Also very welcome.
    • More than 330 new features added to the online editor just adds to the capability of working online that makes it a more capable experience and closer to that of the desktop editor.  For years I hear users saying how much they don't like to work online because they miss the capabilities they have in Trados Studio.  So I also welcome this... it really needs to happen!
    • new apps... always a plus.  The Multilingual Excel filetype I know is something users have wanted for years and we also added pixel support for verification since these filetypes are often used in software localization as well as gaming.
    • getting the cloud capabilities of Trados Studio at no additional cost is also very important.  This is a clear message that whilst we did put a time limit on this before we now offer these cloud capabilities for individual users as part of their Trados Studio licence so they can do their work anywhere they like as long as they have browser access.  No need to worry that you might start relying on something that will carry a cost in the future.  It also means the step up to more collaborative tools in the cloud is really simple and you will be able to use all the same resources you used with Trados Studio.

There is more, and you'll no doubt learn more and more about the details as time goes by.  But in my opinion there is already a lot here worth upgrading for.

  • 1. I was alerted to the new version in a promotional mail from a reseller.  "Learn how to get the new version of Trados free of charge".  I haven't had any communication from Trados/SDL/RWS about this directly, and I don't really follow social media, so the fault for not knowing about this is mine. :-)

    2. It is perhaps a limitation of my own knowledge that I don't know what "views" are.  I know that MemoQ has "views", but I assumed that the word "views" was being used generically in the infographic.  Your post seems to imply that "views" is a specific and existing feature of Trados...?

    3. I did see the item about the cloud capabilities at no cost, yes, but unless there are multiple services in the Trados ecosystem that are cloud related that I'm not aware of, I am unable to figure out exactly what this new "free" feature is supposed to be.  The FAQ page says that the relevant service has always been free, so it must be a different service than the one I was thinking of.

Oh, and don't you mind the carping. :-) Trados is a fine tool.  And thank you for taking the time to respond to my query.

How's it to make this post always on top

    2.

You can't. But as long as there is interest and activity on it then it will stay at the top.

    How's version2022 PlugIns ? compatable with version 2021 PlugIns ?

Unfortunately not.  Our appstore team started documenting the process developers will need to go through to update their plugins as we have well ovr a hundred that we maintain ourselves.  So it is not something we want to do at all!  But it is required because of the changes in 2022, some updated 3rd party assemblies many plugins rely on, and a few breaking changes in the APIs.

You ask a very good question though, and you're the first person I've heard ask it, so here's a sneak peak into the documentation we're working on which will give you some idea:

    https://developers.rws.com/studio-api-docs/articles/hints_tips/Update_Plugins/update_plugins_to_Studio2022.html

put this together so deserves a mention at least.  He's also updated a few plugins already to test this and we'll start working through them all next week as we also need to make them available to the Beta testers who rely quite heavily on various apps as part of their normal workflow these days.

  • so the fault for not knowing about this is mine. :-)

I wouldn't go that far. We do our best to publicise this stuff in as many places as possible but I personally don't have a facebook or a linkedin account anymore so can't blame anyone for not seeing this!  I wasn't aware of the communication you mention but I'll speak to or reseller manager to make sure the correct information is going out through those channels too.

So thank you for that feedback.

It is perhaps a limitation of my own knowledge that I don't know what "views" are

These are all referred to as "Views":

Screenshot of Trados Studio interface showing the navigation pane with icons for Welcome, Projects, Files, Reports, Editor, and Translation Memories.

If you hover over them you'll see the name "Files View", Projects View" etc.  Once you get your hands on 2022, or see more information over the coming weeks, you'll learn more about what changes have been made here.

I know that MemoQ has "views"

Indeed... a great feature too.  We do have something similar available through an app, called... wait for it... studioViews!  In light of this conversation I almost wish I'd called it something else, but in reality I was in fact linking it to the feature in memoQ which I always liked.  This app is a great replacement for SDLXLIFF Split and Merge but it also supports splitting up files based on whatever you are filtering on in the Studio "Editor View" or even what you have selected in that view... and importing back in again later.  So very similar to memoQ Views.

This app is also one of my favourite apps as I love the flexibility it brings to Studio.

  • I followed up on a few things this morning as I wondered why you didn't receive any emails.  Looks like you specifically unsubscribed from receiving RWS marketing emails.  Always a double edged sword... but good to know we honoured your request ;-)
