Pre-translate "translates" source into source and not into target

Hello,

I may just be having this problem because I'm new to Trados and trying to understand it, but I followed the tutorial and can't seem to correct it when it keeps showing both sides of the workspace in French instead of the original French facing the suggestions in English.

I correctly input the source and target languages as "French" and "English" respectively, and I have TMs from the client under the "French to English" language pair. I've tried to reupload it a few different ways but it keeps coming out the same. For example, it puts the original "plan d'urgence" on the left into the corresponding segment on the right exactly as is, as "plan d'urgence."

Can anyone advise me on this? Maybe I just have the wrong setting when importing it somehow, but I swear I went straight from downloading the software to following the tutorial for this project...

Thanks!

  • Hi Dylan

Have you checked the TM itself? My guess is that it might contain French-French entries.

  • Do you still require help?

In order to troubleshoot this, 2 things come to mind.

    1. How are you initiating the project - as a single document or as a project?
    2. What happens if the TM is not referenced.

This will help me understand if the root cause of this is project/setting related or unintended behaviour from the TM.

    1. How are you initiating your project. Are you Translating as single document, or are you creating a project.
The reason I ask is that there are Batch Tasks or features -  that tells studio to copy source to Target - which in your case my be an unwanted feature.

Other default settings that apply when you do translate as single document may be:
Trados Studio options menu with 'Automatically copy source content to target cells when opening document' option checked and highlighted with a red arrow.

Trados Studio options menu under 'Automation' tab with 'Copy source when no match is found' option checked and highlighted with a red arrow.

    2. Try open the TM in the Translation Memory Maintenance view (bottom left). This is to verify the language direction and also a general overview of what is in the TM. Meaning to ensure you are going from source French to Target English and that French has French just as English only has English.

I hope this gives you some clarity and of some help to you
