Trados 2021 crashes when opening idml files

I have a package with three idml files, Trados loads the package correctly but when i try to open the idml files to translate them, it crashes without any error message.

Only two of the idml files make Trados crash, Trados can open for translation the third one without any issue.

The version of the three idml files is the same, 17.2, and I have already tried to no avail all the possible solutions posted in the RWS Community.

Thanks for any help

  • Unfortunately, for confidentiality reasons, I cannot share the package with anyone.

No problem Helena, I was actually asking Włodzimierz.  You have a package which means it's too late as the project would have been created already without using this option... although I suspect your problem is something else.

To resolve your problem we would absolutely need to see the package.  Given you can open one but not the other two there is something worthy of investigation.  One thing you could try though is to unzip the package to a folder on your computer.  Just add .zip to the end and unzip it.  You'll be working with a copy anyway so don't worry about breaking anything!

Once you've doe that you'll see the standard project layout with the sdlproj file, a source and target language folder for example.  Open the target language folder and you'll find the sdlxliff files for your project inside.  Try opening them one at a time as single file projects and see if that works.  If it does then you could translate the sdlxliff files separately in your own project and then return them to your client separately.  They should be able to easily get them back into their project... but we can help if they don't know how to do that.

It might also be useful if you go to the Files View of the project you created from the package and see what the "file type identifier" is here:

Trados Studio interface showing the Files View with a selected file named 'securityupdate.docx' marked as 'Translatable' and a file type identifier 'WordprocessingML v.2'.

  • Thank you very much Paul! Unfortunately I lost this project due to all those problems. Now I'm in a rush with another project so I will try your solution as soon as possible and I will let you know if it works! Thanks again!
