This is a deficiency of Trados
This is a matter of "Source Comment Filtering"
-and again it has "External" attribute as you mentioned above.
The CADF has to be improved to support it.

At the "Comment" pane you can confirm it, at a elementary level.
At there, it filters on its own pane only, not on Editor pane.

You can have a workaround for the time being, of course.
But, unfortunately, it is a Paid service.

quick tested..

basically, it works on the basis of "Regular expressions"
so
the last one searches External comments and criterion means "Does it has number 3 or 6 ?" then the result are 2 segments.

The solution is simple enough if you add the comment as DSI instead of a comment, like this:

Now you can use the Advanced Display Filter to filter on the DSI information:

Which gets you this:

So simple enough if you prepare the file in this way.  The DSI Viewer is perfect here because you can still see the comments as you work and you can filter on them, even using regular expressions if you choose.

nice and clean, if You have control over OriginalFile.

If the sample was an example of the real format then you could even save the source and process the project again.  Depends how many files like these you get I suppose.  But I agree with you that the ADF could use an enhancement... I wish it was still the community ADF in times like this!
