Emojis lost in Trados 2021

I have an issue when working with xml files that contain emojis (for example the lighbulb emoji). After the file is imported, the emoji is completely lost from Trados and does not appear again after the translation is exported. I can see this subject was opened in the past, but I had the impression it was fixed for Trados 2021. Is this still a problem that cannot be solved?

Thank you in advance.

I ran a quick test in 2022 first as I had it open:

Trados Studio interface showing translation segments with source text in English and target text in Hungarian, including an emoji in segment 4.

    Target file:

Text editor displaying continuous Hungarian text without clear segment separation, including repeated phrases.

I needed to rename the file as html and open it in a browser to see it of course since I won't be able to in an text editor for obvious reasons.  Both source and target look like this in a text editor:

Error in Trados Studio with source text 'Text for translation' not properly closed in XML tags, indicated by red font and a checkbox.

Error in Trados Studio with Hungarian text 'Szoveg forditasra' not properly closed in XML tags, indicated by red font and a checkbox.

(whitespace difference is down to me testing with the default xml normalizing my target)

    So checked quickly in 2021:

Trados Studio interface showing translation segments with source text in English and target text in German, including an emoji in segment 4.

    Target file:

Text editor displaying continuous German text without clear segment separation, including repeated phrases and a question mark.

Looks exactly the same to me.  Perhaps you can explain why you think this isn't working as you haven't done that other than to say the lightbulb disappeared?  Can you show a screenshot to help understand why?

  • Dear Paul,

Thank you. I'm sorry, I left some information out. Due to the way the file is formated, we need to use a project template that I am sending attached (certain segments need to be locked etc).

    template_1.zip

I am also sending a new version of the test file that I would kindly ask you to use this time. I redacted information from the first one and must have done too much, so it didn't work properly.

I am also sending a screenshot of what we can see when we import the new file I sent you using this template. As you can see, there is no lightbulb.

Screenshot of Trados Studio interface showing a list of text segments for translation with checkboxes and warning icons indicating issues with certain segments.

Please tell me where the custom filetype is that you created?  I don't see anything in your template.  In fact if I preview the xml file with your template I see this in 2021:

Trados Studio preview window showing a segment with the text 'Text for translation' and another segment with the text 'The segment that contains the emoji' with an emoji symbol.

  • I'm sorry, I don't understand what you mean by "custom filetype". This template was created in a previous version of Trados and to be honest we just moved it over to Trados 2021, I don't know how it was created exactly. I tried to access the settings in the template itself but I cannot see any. You cannot see the settings either from the sdltpl file I sent?

  •

    ok... you said:

we need to use a project template that I am sending attached (certain segments need to be locked etc).

Please explain what in the project template you provided is affecting the way the file is being handled other than you seem to have added *.xml to the XLIFF 2.0 filetype so it gets used for this file.

This template was created in a previous version of Trados and to be honest we just moved it over to Trados 2021

    Bad idea.  You said:

I had the impression it was fixed for Trados 2021.

You are not using 2021 if you did this.  You are using whatever version of Studio that template came from.  I suggest you recreate the template in 2021 and then test again.

  • Dear Paul,

I don't know what is affecting the way the file is being handled, as I said, the template was not created by me.

I am indeed using Trados 2021, I know what Trados I have. I would love to recreate the template in Trados 2021, but I don't know how, because I cannot see the settings of this template anywhere. Can you suggest how I can do this?

I'm wondering how you added it if you don't know how to see it?  Maybe I'm misunderstanding you completely?

Trados Studio screenshot showing the Project Templates window with a list including 'Default' and 'Template_1'. A red arrow points from the 'Setup' menu to 'Project Templates'.

I am indeed using Trados 2021, I know what Trados I have.

I mean, if you import a template from an older version then even though you are working in 2021 you are no longer using settings from 2021.  So if it was buggy you just bring in the bugs.  If 2021 fixed something you may not be seeing the benefit of the fix because you introduced the bug!

I wasn't questioning the actual version you have started up and are working in.
