Empty source segments in Editor view (Trados 2021)

Hi

I found this thread on empty source segments you answered over four years ago:

Trados 2017: how to handle empty source segments?

We encounter a similar problem: We have empty source segments in Trados Studio that in Word contain some kind of symbol, that Trados seems not to be able to display correctly.

Correctly displayed symbol:

Close-up of a symbol in Trados Studio not displayed correctly, highlighted in red.

Not correctly displayed symbol:

Three similar symbols in Trados Studio with the first one not displayed correctly, highlighted in red.

Trados Studio Editor view:

Trados Studio Editor view showing a list of segments with some empty source segments highlighted in red.

I noted that the symbols are not the same (different character code, cf. screenshots below). However, they both belong to the Unicode (hex).

Symbol dialog box in Word showing the correctly displayed symbol with Unicode name and code.

Symbol dialog box in Word showing the incorrectly displayed symbol with Unicode name and code.

Is there any possibility to display the content of the empty source segments in Trados?

Or is there any way to filter the empty source segments in order to lock them in one go?

Here some further useful information on this case:

  • File type of the source document: Word (docx)
  • Trados version: 2021 SR2 - 16.2.10.9305
  • Sample file:

Trados Studio Editor view with empty source segments, no visible text or symbols.DOCX

Thank you very much for your support.

Best regards

Seraina

  • Hi

I tested your file in 2022 and 2021 then used NMT for translation as well as copy source to target
The target file seems to keep the correct symbol unicode

Screenshot of a symbol selection dialog box with a highlighted white circle symbol, Unicode name and character code displayed.

I assume where it shows unicode 20DD in your second screen print, its from the target version?

Your question was to also filter & lock.
There are so many ways with the advanced display filter being easily accessible

Screenshot of Trados Studio interface showing Translation Results with DeepL Translator provider and a file path, no visible errors or warnings.

I hope this helps a bit

  • Hi

Thank you for having a closer look.

Appreciate your input with regard to how to filter for these empty source segments.

Unfortunately, your answer does not help though regarding my visualisation question.

It is correct that the target text keeps the correct symbols. However, it is not about the target text. It is rather about the visualisation of the symbols in Trados.

(All my print screens are from the source text, but they show the same unicode also in the target text. So this does not really matter in this case.)

What I see in Trados is this:

Screenshot of Trados Studio source text with segments, one segment highlighted in yellow indicating an issue with symbol visualization.

So, the symbol marked in green with the following unicode are visualised correctly:

Close-up view of a correctly visualized symbol in Trados Studio, marked with a green border.

Symbol selection window in Trados Studio showing a correctly visualized symbol with its unicode, highlighted with a green border.

However, the symbol marked in yellow with the following unicode is not visualised:

Close-up view of an incorrectly visualized symbol in Trados Studio, marked with a yellow border.

Symbol selection window in Trados Studio showing an incorrectly visualized symbol with its unicode, highlighted with a yellow border.

How can I make sure that I see the yellow symbols in the source segments in Trados, too?

This would also help to not copy the symbol from the original source document to filter and lock these segments, but rather to copy the symbol from the source segment in the editor.

    Thank you for your support.

    Best regards
