Update: I decided to try out the HTML file type and copy the content into notepad++. As it turns out, the HTML file type offers exactly this solution (with a slight tweak of the tag settings):

But I'm guessing there's no way to keep the file in Word format and use the embedded content processors this way? If so, I'd love to hear it!

But from your first screen print I see the text you highlighted in yellow is for translation.
But I also see in your second print, the text in the tag is formatted differently with your tagged information displayed in different segmetns 

Without knowing more about your content, it could be just the way the tags were being displayed in the first screen print.
Within MS Word File Type did you review the Advanced settings

But I am glad you have options and found a way of progressing

Okay, then I'll just save the Word files as html and save them back as Word in the end. It's a detour, but I think it's manageable.

To avoid confusion: my first screen print was of my settings in the Word file type, my second of (another part of the text with different hyperlinks) in the HTML file type.

Ideally, I wanted it to be displayed/segmented in Word the way HTML does it, but I now understand that that's not (yet) possible.

I think it is possible.. why don't you share a single page of Word with the html as you have it so we have an example to play with?

To summarize, the files currently look like this on my end:

1. Using the Word file type with the settings mentioned in my question:

Tag content is put in the middle of the phrase, which isn't ideal for general translation or TM purposes.

2. Using the HTML file type with a slight tweak which puts href content as "translatable":

- The a href tags are perfectly put in separate segments, but this requires me to convert every Word file to HTML and back to Word in multiple languages at the end of the project.

- Other placeholders (highlighted in yellow) are not converted to tags even though I used the Plain Text Embedded Content processors Lydia introduced me to in another question I had recently. I've added them in an identical way as in the Word file type -> embedded content.

So if there is a way to use the Word file type from image 1 and get the HTML content processing results from image 2, I'd have the best of both worlds.

In fact... I may have read you incorrectly before.  If you want to really translate the hyperlinks themselves (which is unusual I think as it creates a crazy amount of work to maintain the websites) then you can only do this with the html filetype.  I would have been similar to you like this for translation:

I feared as much. In this case, we do need to provide the translated URL paths as well, unfortunetaly.

I'll try it out with converting all Word files into HTML and see if the preparation before and after is manageable.
