make translation memory from excel file - not getting ST and TT next to each other

Dear Community!

I'm trying to make a translation memory from an excel file. I'm following Paul's suggestion as per the following link:  How can I make translation memory from excel file? I have source and target ready in excel.  It seemed to be going ok, I keep following all the steps but I end up with a weird file with 2 columns (ST and the TT in a vertical kinda sequence!!!!)

I'm getting the ST and the TT in a vertical sequence - both on the left and on the right hand-side (exactly the same, repeated).

And even repeated on both sides. I started by creating a doc in Excel: EN ST on the left, IT TT on the right. Then went to the Bilingual File Type (as explained by Paul in the link), the Excel is converted, but the final doc is not what I was expecting.

Advice?

Thank you in advance,

Maria

ok, I know what’s going on: The Bilingual Excel file type has to be above the other Excel file types, like this:

Trados Studio Project Settings showing File Types list with Bilingual Excel file type highlighted and positioned above other Excel file types.

The reason is that the first file type matching the file extension (xlsx in this case) of the list will be used. As you have it now, Trados Studio is using the default Excel type, not the Bilingual Excel one.

You can do that in 2 ways in your Project Settings:

    • Select the Bilingual Excel file type and then click con the Move Up button as many times as needed to be above the other Excel filetypes.
    • Untick the Microsoft Excel 2007-2019 filetype.

Now preview it. If the columns are well defined in the Bilingual Excel filetype (I can’t see it from your screen-shot), then everything will be fine.
