Do not store files on desktop, this is usually located somewhere on your drive c: together with Windows and other programs.

Store ALL files, including TMs and TBs, on your local hard drive other than c: This hard drive should be a SSD or better a NVM SSD.

Thank you for your prompt reply! And I meant "on my laptop", not "on my desktop", sorry. My files are located in a very normal folder e.g. C:\Users\asfra\Documents\Work\Client\etc.

My local hard drive has ,only one partition, C:, and I don't see any reason why I would create a specific partition for my files and document. C: is good enough for system files and regular Document folders. It's a 512GB SSD, and I have 16GB of RAM (I bought this ASUS laptop last year).

Like I said, I never had these issues before, and I'm quite certain my hardware spec have nothing to to with it. Trados Studio 2021 works fine!

I mean it, hardware is no the issue. My SSD is 50% empty and I have a 4-core Intel i7 processor. My laptop is recent and I'm quite good at choosing specs for my hardware.

Since you seem so worried about my PC crashing, please rest assured I have backups. Like cloud, or external drives. This is not the issue here. And I don't have any antivirus on (I trust Microsoft better than 3rd parties on this), so antivirus is not the issue either.

I was wondering if someone had encountered the same issue and had noticed some option or setting in Trados was the culprit.

Hi Anne-Sophie,

Microsoft Windows Security includes antivirus. Do you have your Trados software (Studio and MultiTerm) added to your exclusions list? If not, this could be the problem.

Thumbs up for the backups, this is perfect.

Unfortunately, your hardware is a part of the issue. A 4 core Intel means i3 and these are weak. Trados Studio eats a lot of ressources. IMO you need an i5 or better an i7. Even my i7-1250U is not really very perfomant. And if the opening takes so much time, there is somewhere an issue in your file management. This indeed may be caused by the MS Security, checking the files as they open.

On my desktop I have i9-11900K and even this one can be slow, when opening files with 20,000+ segments. And it gets slower, if you open many (even small) files in a virtual merge.

Thank you Jerzy, yes I'm looking into MS Security, following Alison Field 's advice. My CPU is an i7 by the way, 4-core 8-threads.

So your processor is an i7 U, similar to mine. Opening files takes here also longer as on the desktop.

Beside the MS Security Option check also you energy settings. Most probably your PC is set up to allow to drop the processor down to 30% of its power. I changed this to 100% with external power supply and 70% when working with battery. This made things a little better.

But I know, when I will buy a new laptop, I shall by all means avoid an U processor. These are low-voltage processors, but not as powerfull as their desktop companions. So an i7 in a laptop is not the same as i7 in a desktop and the difference might be huge. As already stated, an older i9-11900K is much (really much) faster than the newer i7-1250U.

Thank you, trying my "high performance" mode, too! It was set on "average". Still doesn't explain why the same action only takes a few seconds in Trados Studio 2021 though

Indeed. I would indeed expect Trados Studio 2022 to be slower in performance than 2021, as it uses more computer power, but the diffrerece in the file opening time shouldn't be that much.

Hi again,

Turning off the 'Look Ahead' function can also help speed things up when working, among other things.

Though, it sounds as if it's just opening files that is slow for you.

Jerzy's the man you need for in-depth technical knowledge on your hardware!

PS: Anne-Sophie, are all your plug-ins the latest versions for Studio SR2, and is MultiTerm the latest too?

I usually remove all my plug-ins before updating Studio and then add them via the onboard RWS AppStore via the Add-Ins tab (all in one without rebooting between each).

Thank you I'll check that, too! I intend to make a fresh install of Trados 2022 SR2 with all your and Jerzy Czopik 's advices implemented. That is, as soon I have delivered this urgent project using good old Trados 2021

I'm sure once all is running as it should be, you'll enjoy 2022 SR2 as much as I do!
