how to apply italics when they are not active/cómo poner algo en cursiva cuando no está activa la función

hola, pregunto sin revisar si ya se ha planteado esta duda en el foro.

SDL 2022, el proyecto viene de memoq convertido a xliff y no está activa la cursiva ni la negrita.

Hay alguna forma de activar la cursiva?

I ask without checking if this question has already been raised in the forum.

SDL 2022, the project comes from memoq converted to xliff and neither italics nor bold is active.

Is there any way to activate italics?

as you can see italic and other functions appear grey, not highlighted

como se aprecia en la imagen, las funciones están en gris, no salen resaltadas

Screenshot of Trados Studio interface showing a translation project with text segments in Portuguese and Spanish. The formatting toolbar is visible with italic and bold options greyed out, indicating they are inactive.

Interesting conversation with the AI. But the simple reality is that your source file is an xliff and Trados Studio doesn’t know anything about what type of formatting is supported. This is because the underlying format that created the xliff could have been anything.  So the only formatting you can apply will be what’s in the source. And in this case there is no formatting in the source.

To explain that better… it’s not really formatting you would be applying from the source, it would simply be tags and you would transfer them from the source to the target. Studio won’t know what they are for, they are just tags.

The only way formatting can be applied is if you have the original source file.. which in this case looks like a Word file. So if you have memoQ you should be able to do that there. Although it looks as though you may have been provided with a split file so unless it was you who split the original even that xliff if added to memoQ may not support formatting… although I’d have to test that.

This would be the same for any CAT tool that is given an xliff as the source file.

  • Thanks for your detailed feedback, Paul.

Source is Portuguese and target is Spanish, the terms to apply italic are English words that are not translated (is an orthography rule for foreign terms, in case you don't know), and there are no tags on source. One option would be quotations "" but italic is preferable and it is what they use on the website of the client.

Files were originally from MemoQ and the agency sent them to me prepared to be edited on Studio, upon my request

File name displayed in Trados Studio with extensions: mqxliff, pt-BR, x-es, XL.sdlxliff.

When saving the target it can be

Two file names in Trados Studio: one with extension mqxliff and another with extensions pt-BR, x-es, XL.sdlxliff.

I hope this gives you some light to understand more the issue.

I commented this with the PM earlier and she told me to add a comment when formatting was not active.

And, yes, looks like you are right, the file would be editable only having the source file.

I though of using the exported bilingual file to apply the italic and importing it back but the font stay normal.

    Note:

I have just found some tags that appear to be italic

Screenshot of Trados Studio showing Portuguese text with inline tags for formatting. The word 'loose' is highlighted, indicating a formatting issue.

Then, pasting that code on target in the required cases would rend an italic font on target final file?

    Thanks again!

I understand the problem. This is a limitation of working with intermediate files and not the original source. Simple as that.

  • thanks, Paul, Have you seen the tags I found?

Try it. I could not confirm this would work without testing. It might work… but given these are normally placeholders that are used when recreating the target file from the original source I think it is probably unlikely. But give it a go… can’t hurt to validate this for yourself.

  • Hello Paul

PM has arranged a single document with the italic tag

is working when i paste it on the same file opened as single doc
but when I paste it in the project folder files is not
the segment has tags visible in source and target and the tag visualization is activated
Tag for italic is on 3rd segment on target and  I pasted on 4th segment easily
Screenshot of Trados Studio interface showing a document with Portuguese text on the left and Spanish translation on the right. Segment 4 in Portuguese is highlighted with italic formatting not carried over to the Spanish side.
    tag visualization is activated
but in the project file (already edited) no tag appears when pasting in segment 6
Screenshot of Trados Studio with a Portuguese source text on the left and its Spanish translation on the right. Tags are visible in segment 5 of the source but not in the translation, indicating a potential issue with tag transfer.
It makes me think that there is some step I miss or there is something that avoids to paste the tags

Hope you can send some light here as this is on the final step of my review and we are trying to avoid the PM to add the italic in MemoQ after delivery

    Appreciating your time

    Regards
