If you have to keep removing the TM it may be that it is in a location that is being synced to the cloud... maybe OneDrive for example... and is not made available when you're trying to update it because it's syncing or attempting to every time you add an entry.  If this is the case try moving your TMs to a folder that is not on a path that includes OneDrive (or other shared drive).

Alternatively change the settings of that folder by right-clicking on it and selecting "Always keep on this device":

Thanks for getting back to me. That makes sense, but it makes no difference. I tried moving it somewhere else that is not backed up, but the same. It's like the TM is now read-only. Trados will pull existing matches from the memory, but won't allow me to write anything new to it. In other words, it won't update.

I suggest you open this TM in the "Translation Memories" view and check whether you can make changes to a segment or not. And run a "Recompute fuzzy index" or "Upgrade" operation on the TM.

Thanks. I just tried all those things, but to no avail. It's a very big memory. Around 250 GB, with ove 105,000 entries. Perhaps it just won't take anymore. As I said, I can still read it, but can't write.

Then perhaps we should go back to basics as we don't know anything about your setup yet.  Can you share some screenshots and give us the following info:

• your project settings for Language Pairs that shows the TMs and all the checkboxes associated with updating
• are you using a MAC or a Windows machine?
• what are the actual paths to the TMs in your project?  Please make sure you check the actual path in the project settings and not just where you think it is?
• how do you know nothing is being updated?

Sorry for the basic questions but given we went straight to the likely cause if everything else is well sorted, and this didn't help, I think we better get the baseline correct.

These pics are in Japanese, but I imagine everything is in the same place.

I have attached an image showing the TM selected in the project with link showing the location of the TM (TM Location and Check Update Box), an image of the TM folder with update date shown as earlier today (this is when I upgraded the TM) (TM Update Time), an image showing that even though the segment has been translated, there is nothing appearing in the the upper left pane of the TM (No Data Update), and image showing the TM open (Memory Open) Btw, I can search within the memory.

I am using Windows 11.

I have checked the paths thoroughly.

And I know it's not being updated because I can see it's not as can be seen in the "No Data Update" image, and because when I search the memory for a newly translated section, there's no hit.

ok - this screenshot tells us you are still using OneDrive for this TM:

Whilst 100k TUs isn't massive by any stretch of the imagination, a TM of this size, especially one upgraded for fragment matching, is still of sufficient size to cause problems with synchronisation issues simply because it's pretty big to be synching to the cloud on a regular basis as you work.

Please try putting this somewhere else that is not on the same path as OneDrive.  If you cannot prevent it from synching as explained before it's good to take a belt and braces approach and ensure that it's not even in a location where OneDrive can impact it at all.

I would also note that Microsoft are not whiter than white here.  They regularly put out updates to OneDrive because these synching operations cause problems for many applications, sometimes even their own!  Since we don't support OneDrive in any way in a desktop application of Trados Studio you would be advised to do what you can to mitigate the potential problems this can cause.
