Studio 2024 installing but not working

After working with a trial version of Studio 2024, I decided I might venture investing in it hoping for some return on the investment. So, today I purchased a licence. I started working on my project - which happens to be due tomorrow - and was hoping for as carefree a use as I had experienced during the trial period. I couldn't have been more wrong. The problem started when I found out I couldn't search for words or phrases within the text (Ctrl+F didn't work and the search feature in the ribbon was greyed out. I noticed there was an update available in the side panel. I thought: "hey, who knows that might fix it". Again, how wrong was I. Not only was the search issue not solved, Studio didn't even show. The mask, yes, all sorts of background operations, seemed to be going on too. And then: nothing! I've tried everything I could think of. I'm a simple user, I'm not getting excited in a positive way when software that is supposed to help me (and at what price!) is in fact making my life difficult and might make my client very unhappy. For indeed: I am using it for one client only (all others have moved to online platforms - with usually a responsive helpdesk).

I'm not expecting any useful answer within the time window I have available. I've already hoped too much in vain today. I seriously regret my purchase, it's been a waste of money and a waste of time. Yet, I will be so very grateful to anyone who can help me feel slightly less ripped off.

  • Hi

Are you able to open Studio now? Or what do you mean it doesn't show up?

As for the search issue, are you by any chance using a second screen?

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Elisa,

Thank you for responding. No it isn't. Now even my licence for Studio 2014 has gone up in smoke. As for 2024: all I'm seeing is the mask doing all kinds of things, such as loading stuff (application modules, extensions), plugins, and executing things, and then nothing.

    Is this fixable you think?

For now, I am going to return to using my very ancient but very reliable and sober memoQ 6.2. It can't integrate Juremy and it doesn't show hard spaces (to think this specific feature is why I decided to convert to Studio 2024), but at least it's working (plus it gives you the option of showing source and target in a top-bottom view instead of the unadaptable left-right view which Trados can offer ever since they buried TagEditor).

  • As for the second screen, how do you mean? Monitor? I'm working with my laptop connected to an external screen. Been doing that for the best part of this millennium.

I think Elisa is asking if the find screen is hidden behind an application or on a different screen... more importantly are you always connected to that external screen?  One problem we see from time to time is users disconnecting the external screen and then finding the find window is still on it... only now they can't see it.

You do have access to Trados Cloud and there you can switch the views to "top-bottom" if this is what you prefer?  The online editor is pretty good and does offer other advantages since it's a browser and you have access to all sorts of extensions related to language.

  • Thanks for your suggestion using Trados Cloud. I don't know that option (it's not a top priority issue but may come in handy).

As regards the second screen I'll give you the full story. Yesterday was Murphy's Law day. We had a power outage in my street (happens very rarely) so I took my laptop with me to a friend's place, where I connected it to his external screen (not as large as my own screen). I don't know if that's why I couldn't see any search window still being open  - and would that explain the find feature in the ribbon being greyed out? That's where I regrettably decided it would be a good idea to install the update.

In any case, the issue now is that I cannot continue to work on my file and will need to start from scratch. Or can I somehow access that file and continue using it in another programme or Studio version?

"Question improvement suggestion": Please provide more details such as the exact version of Trados Studio you are using, the operating system of your computer, and any error messages you might have received. Also, it would be helpful to know if you have tried any troubleshooting steps already, such as reinstalling the software or contacting support.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing with Trados Studio 2024. It sounds like you're dealing with two separate issues: the search function not working and the software not launching after an update.

For the search function issue, you can try resetting your keyboard shortcuts. Go to File > Options > Keyboard Shortcuts and click on 'Reset All'. If the problem is specific to a certain project or file, check for issues with that item.

As for the software not launching, this could be due to a failed update or a problem with the installation. You can try repairing your Trados Studio installation through the Control Panel's Programs and Features. Find Trados Studio 2024, right-click on it, and select 'Repair'. If the issue persists, consider reinstalling Trados Studio. Please ensure you back up your settings and resources beforehand.

If these steps do not resolve your issues, it would be helpful to have more information about your system and any error messages you've received.

I hope this answer addressed your question. If not, please reject the answer, add the question improvement suggestion information, and click the RWS Community AI checkbox on the right to try again.

  • Well, nothing useful so far. Perhaps it's time I'd ask my money back. This ain't what I want to pay 750 euros for.
