Tm in 2024 doesnt work

Hi there.!

I am using Trados 2024. 18.0.2.3255. Since I use this version I have problems with the TM.

It doesn't save entries! It happeny especially with old TMs. I save the translation, but

it doesn't show up in the TM! Is this a general problem with version 2024?

All fields like updating etc. are checked. Any idea?

I just opened a project with a bilingual Excel file. Column A and B. So I can use the vocabulary from the file.

All went fine, all is translated and checked but it was not saved in the TM.

"Question improvement suggestion": Please provide more details about the error message you are receiving, if any. Also, it would be helpful to know if you have tried any troubleshooting steps already, and if there have been any recent changes to your system or software.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello,

It seems like you're experiencing an issue with Trados Studio 2024 where your Translation Memory (TM) is not saving entries, especially with older TMs. This is not a general problem with Trados Studio 2024, but it can occur under certain circumstances.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve this issue:

Step 1: Check your TM settings. Make sure that the option to update the TM is enabled. This can be found in the Project Settings under the Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Translation Memory and Automated Translation settings.

Step 2: Try to reorganize your TM. You can do this by going to the Translation Memories view, right-clicking on the TM, and selecting 'Reorganize'.

Step 3: If the issue persists, try creating a new TM and see if the problem continues. If it doesn't, it might be an issue with your old TM.

Step 4: If none of the above steps work, you might want to consider reinstalling Trados Studio 2024. Before doing so, make sure to back up all your projects and TMs to avoid any data loss.

Remember, the issue you mentioned about the TM results not being displayed in the TM window of the Editor after updating to Trados Studio 2024 - 18.0.1.2259 can be resolved by manually adjusting the top margins of the TM results display and the Editor window. This problem occurs despite the TM being active and the document pre-translating from the TM because the top-margin of the TM results is drawn down too much, hiding the results from view. Resetting the Window Layout might not fix this, so a manual adjustment is necessary.

Can you provide a little more information?

    • where is your TM stored?  The full path please.
    • How do you know it's not updating?  Where and how are you checking this?

  • Hi Paul, I always store the tm in the project folder. So in this case it was: D:\Install\Arbeit\Translations\Church. I always do it like that. I went back to the segmant and it didn't save. Last time I used the old tm from a French customer and it was the same. It didn't save entries. I had to create a new TM, import the old entries and it worked.

How do you manage your TMs between the projects? Or do you really create a new TM for each project?

  • Hi Jerzy! I do create a new TM for every customer, not for every project. I didn't change anything. It seems when I use "old" TMs with the new 2024 it is the case that it is not saving the segments.

This is such a fundamental part of Trados Studio I do doubt the problem is with the software here.  I wonder if you're creating Project TMs and then checking the Main TM you selected without running a batch task to update after putting everything into the Project TM?

I don't know how much you know about Trados Studio so forgive the dumb clarification... but Project TMs are not just TMs you put in your Project, they have a very specific role and are a feature of Trados Studio.  If you use this when you create a project they are a bit like a scratchpad TM.  They get updated instead of the TM you initially selected... the idea being you only update your Main TM when the project is over and you're happy with the final translation of the files in your document.

  • Well, I am using Trados since 2007 and never had problems with any TM.

I'm sure you have, although Trados 2007 didn't have this same concept of Project Translation Memories hence my question.  I'm only trying to help and since I can't see your actual computer I have to guess and try to encourage you to provide enough information to help.

  • I know. But it happens with NEW TMs as well. Sometimes. What do you mean with "run a batch task"?

  •

I know. But it happens with NEW TMs as well.

That just strengthens the likelihood that you have a default project template set up to use Project TMs.  I think we need to establish how you are creating your projects and go from there.

When you create a project the default these days is "Prepare without Project TM".  This was changed from the early days of Trados Studio because the concept of Project TMs was confusing for Freelance Translators who typically don't use this concept.  So if you want to use Project TMs today you need to specifically use "Prepare":

Screenshot of Trados Studio's 'Create a New Project - Batch Tasks' window with 'Prepare without project TM' and 'Prepare' options highlighted.

If you do this a TM is created for every TM you actually selected, but this one, the Project TM, only contains TUs that are found in your Main TM based on the settings you chose... for example:

Screenshot of Trados Studio's 'Project Settings - Project 39' window showing Translation Memory and Automated Translation settings with two enabled TMs and two project TMs.

So if you use them then your project settings will look something like the screenshot above with your Project TMs named after the main TM you selected and prefixed with the project name.

As you work your translations will be added to this Project TM and not to the Main TM.  When you finish your project you can either use the Finalize batch task, or the Update Main Translation Memories batch tasks that will update the TM you actually selected with the finished and approved translations from your project.  These batch tasks would be these... (1) or (2):

Screenshot of Trados Studio's menu with 'Finalize' and 'Update Main Translation Memories' batch tasks highlighted.
