TM synchronization with other computer - Trados 2021 Freelance

I have been using Trados Studio 2021 Freelance for many, many years. I have also been using Strato HiDrive to synchronize my Desktop PC and laptop for several years.

I have Windows 11 on both computers.

Two weeks ago, I purchased a new laptop and have had problems with the TMs ever since. I have a folder “HiDrive” onboth computers. Ally of the files are synchronized between the two computers, including the TMs. Every time I open a synchronized project on the other computer though, I get the message:

Error
The translation memory … could not be found. Click OK to specify its location, or Cancel to disable this translation memory.

The problem occurs only when I open the project on the second computer. When I open a project on the same computer as previously, everything is fine.

Sometimes the error message appears when I attempt to open the project. And sometimes it is when the project has already been opened and I attempt to open a file in the Editor.

If I click OK and then go into the project settings, the TM is visible. But the project still does not have use a TM in the editor. I have to remove the TM and then add it again.

If I cancel the message, the project opens without a TM. I then go into the project settings and select the TM for the project.

If I open Project Settings, I can see the TM. The name is also show in the Editor view of the file. Results are not shown though. For example, a 100% match is not shown and cannot be found with concordance.

I have not found this issue in any of the forums. What could it be?

Thank you for any ideas!

"Question improvement suggestion": Please provide the exact version of Trados Studio you are using, the operating system of your new laptop, and any recent changes you made to your system or software. Also, it would be helpful if you could share any troubleshooting steps you have already taken to resolve this issue.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello,

It seems like you're experiencing an issue with the synchronization of your Translation Memories (TMs) between your desktop PC and your new laptop. This could be due to a number of reasons, but it's often related to the path that Trados Studio is using to access the TMs.

Step 1: Ensure that the path to your TMs is the same on both computers. If the path differs, Trados Studio might not be able to locate the TMs on the second computer.

Step 2: Check if the TMs are correctly synchronized on your HiDrive. If the TMs are not fully synchronized, this could lead to the error message you're seeing.

Step 3: Try to manually locate the TM when you get the error message. Click 'OK' when the error message appears, then navigate to the location of the TM on your HiDrive.

Step 4: If the above steps don't resolve the issue, you might want to consider storing your TMs locally on both computers and using HiDrive to synchronize them. This would involve copying the TMs to a local folder on each computer, then setting up HiDrive to synchronize that local folder.

Step 5: If the issue persists, it might be a good idea to check for updates within the application or reinstall Trados Studio on your new laptop.

I hope this answer addressed your question. If not, please reject the answer, add the question improvement suggestion information, and click the RWS Community AI checkbox on the right to try again.

  • Dear

If I understand you well, you do not only share the TMs between the two PCs, but also the project folder.
This scenario is officially not supported by RWS. You can read more details about this topic in this article:
    https://gateway.rws.com/csm?id=kb_article_view&sysparm_article=KB0027932

The main problem is that the project settings are not synchronized between instances of Studio. This means that if you have a project open in two Studio instances and make changes to the project settings in one of the instances, this change will not propagate to the other Studio instance. You will need to remove the project and add it again to get the change reflected.
If you work often with two computers, I suggest you use Language Cloud and create your projects in the cloud. This is possible for one single user even with the standard Studio, you don't need a Trados Team subscription for this.

  • Thanks, Walter.

I have identical folders on both computers. There is a main folder (HiDrive) on each computer that contains all of the files (sorted into other folders) to be synchronized. "HiDrive" is synchrozied through the Strato cloud to the folder "HiDrive" on the other computer. Every single folder synchronizes properly - except for the TM disconnect issue. The project itself, with the files I am working on, is fine. The only issue is the TM getting removed.

What is strange is that I never had that problem before getting the new laptop. I have removed and re-installed Strato HiDrive multiple times. No difference.

    It is very frustrating.
