Trados 2024 not opening certain xliff files

I purchased Trados Studio 2024 two months ago; however, there are certain files, which Trados cannot upload. I've tried everything by now, alone or in the company with others.

I've run out of ideas as I've created a folder to be uploaded from, dragged the file into the Welcome page, unzipped the/a package, renamed it, tried opening it from every possible button/option in the tool bar, clicked/ticked all relevant boxes in Options, sent numerous screenshots of what I see, tried converting the file into Word/PDF/Excel, etc., browsed through previous queries here, created packages and folders, and the icon is always this red Adobe Acobat icon, not the white/blue Trados icon.

It's only some xliff files Trados won't upload; all clean Word, PowerPoint, Excel, PDf, ect., files are perfect. I've had to reject assignments because of this, and I really don't know what to do about it any more...

Question improvement suggestion: Provide specific details about the XLIFF files that are not opening, such as their source or any error messages received when attempting to open them.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello,

It sounds like you're experiencing a frustrating issue with certain XLIFF files not opening in Trados Studio 2024. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot this problem:

    **Step 1:** **Check File Integrity**

Ensure that the XLIFF files you are trying to open are not corrupted. If possible, try to obtain a fresh copy of the files from the source.

    **Step 2:** **Verify File Compatibility**

Confirm that the XLIFF files are compatible with Trados Studio 2024. Sometimes, files created in older versions or with different settings may not open correctly.

    **Step 3:** **Update Trados Studio**

Make sure that your Trados Studio 2024 is up to date. Go to 'Help' > 'Check for Updates' to ensure you have the latest version, as updates often fix bugs and improve compatibility.

    **Step 4:** **Open Files Directly**

Instead of dragging files into the Welcome page, try opening them directly through the 'File' > 'Open' > 'Open Package' option. This method can sometimes bypass issues related to file handling.

**Step 5:** **Check for Error Messages**

If you receive any error messages when attempting to open the files, take note of them. This information can be crucial in diagnosing the issue.

    **Step 6:** **Recreate the Project**

If the problem persists, consider recreating the project in Trados Studio. This can sometimes resolve issues related to project settings or file paths.

    **Step 7:** **Contact the Client**

If none of the above steps work, it may be worth reaching out to the client to see if they have encountered similar issues with other translators or if they can provide the original source files.

If you take a couple of the XLIFF files that won't load, delete all the trans-units in them apart from, say 5, and edit the content so there is nothing confidential; then load to the forum in a zip and we can take a look.  Without seeing the file it'll almost be impossible to answer your question as you provided zero details about the files themselves.  You did say XLIFF... but you might be surprised at the variations we see on that!!

  • Hello Paul,

Thank you for your prompt reply. However, I'm still unable to upload these specific files in this forum, as well. Please see the screenshot attached.

I realize it's hard to assist when you can't see the file(s) itself because the system won't allow me to upload this clean xliff file (I believe there are variations, although I don't know much about this).

These files all have this red Adobe Acrobat logo and not the blue/white Trados logo for some reason... I still wonder why :D

Screenshot of a forum post with a pop-up window titled 'Imagevideofile' showing fields for file upload, dimensions set to 900x600, and a message 'No file or URL is selected'. An orange error message on the right reads 'File type is not allowed: STERIS Updates IFU_May 29th_IFU-NE-004 A3 (002).docx.sdlxliff'.

Just zip the file first, then you will be able to.

Also, from your screenshot it looks as though you are loading sdlxliff files.  Given these have already been created by Trados Studio that filetype shouldn't be a problem at all.  Have you tried opening it in a text editor to see if it's all there?

  • Zip.ZIPThank you.

I zipped this file (one of which cannot be opened in Trados 24, zipped or unzipped).

And, yes, everything is there on the file, which requires working on.

Have you tried simply using File -> Translate Single Document?  I just saved your zip, unzipped it, and opened it this way without any problems at all:

Trados Studio interface showing a bilingual document with source and target text columns, translation statuses, and confirmation statistics at the bottom.

Perhaps you can explain a bit more how you are attempting to open it and what happens?

  • Hi Paul,

Yes, I tried opening the file in Trados from create new file/folder, open new file/folder, translate single document/package, zipped the file, unzipped it prior to upload, converting the file, renaming the file, having my colleague send me the file by mail/link, dragging the file, and a few more possibilities, but nothing is working.

It's always these proofreading files, which others originally did, with a red Acrobat logo instead of the Trados logo that won't open in Trados at all. I'm able to work with clean Word, Excel, PDF, and PowerPoint files. Also xliff files that are brand new and not up for proofreading yet.

The same message reoccurs. Trados does not support this type of file, and I never had this problem in the 2021 version, thus I have to decline some of the proofreading work now.

Very odd!  So I'd suggest two things:

    1. Repair your installation of Trados Studio through your windows control panel
    2. Reset Trados Studio
      1. To do this just close Trados Studio and then delete these folders:

        %appdata%\Trados\Trados Studio\Studio18\
        %appdata%\Trados\Trados Studio\18\

You will lose your plugins, and also your settings, but your projects and other resources will remain untouched. Putting the plugins back is trivial via the integrated appstore.

    3. Then restart Trados Studio and see if that helped.

  • Hi Paul,

I repaired the installation via the control panel; however, the folders %appdata%\Trados\Trados Studio\Studio18\ and %appdata%\Trados\Trados Studio\18\ do not exist on my computer. I cannot delete these...

Is there anything else I should delete instead, then?
