With this update, RWS somehow managed to hit yet another new low. Trados still crashes constantly. Autosuggest does not work properly anymore. The termbase still crawls along. The DeepL plugin keeps crashing the app. And now, OpenAI for Trados has started producing utterly nonsensical results in multiple languages. Bravo!

  • While Trados unexpectedly crashing is a real problem of concern, ti should be stressed that Trados has become very complex and dependent on many modules and services provided by others. What you perceive as problem with Trados could just as well be due to some other factors independent of Trados. When installing latest updates with new functionality there is always a risk of coming across some new condition that has not been tested before. Let's give the developer team some time to gather information and correct these new bugs :-)

  • Of course I will — I don’t really have much of a choice. However, ever since Studio 2024 was released, I’ve been experiencing crashes and problems with both the termbase and the DeepL plugin. I had hoped this update would resolve these issues, and I’m still keeping my fingers crossed that it eventually will.

    If you have already tried the 'traditional' Windows Repair/Reset of Studio as described here: Windows Repair...

    I wonder if this might help...

    There is a tool that downloads with the Studio installations, called Trados Plugin Management - it might help, here:

    In Windows explorer, go to folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Trados\Plugin installer then double-click on Sdl.Community.SdlPluginInstaller.exe

    This tool can quietly remove any plug-ins from whichever version/s of Studio that you have installed, without having to open Studio - in fact, you have to have Studio closed to use it successfully.

    Here's how it looks, for example with Trados Studio 2024 selected from the 'Filter by Studio version' dropdown menu:

    Use the filter dropdown menu to select the version of Studio that you want to troubleshoot.

    It lists the relevant plug-ins/apps that are installed at the same time as Studio (e.g. Language Weaver) or have been installed manually (e.g. Comment View Plugin) since the installation of each version of Studio.

    If I'm having weird problems that I can't diagnose, I uninstall all plugins for the specific version of Studio using this (probably old) tool. Then I close Trados Plugin Management (via x top right corner).

    Then I open Studio and install the plugins that I want from the 'on-board' appstore via the Add-ins tab > RWS AppStore > RWS AppStore as here:

    The latest version available for your version of Studio will then be installed.

    To save time, I don't restart Studio after every app/plugin that I install, I do it after I've finished installing them.

  • Unfortunately, none of this works. Trados has crashed at least 20 times today. What's even worse is when Trados crashes during proofreading (advanced display filter), because then all your work is deleted, whether it has been saved or not. Users are simply beta testers, and no bugs in Trados 2024 have been fixed yet.

    This must be an individual problem on your machine. I do use SR1 since very first release without such massive problems. What is your operating system? Where are your files stored? Do you use OneDrive? Have you tried to reset Studio to a full neutral state without any plugins and then install the necessary plugins again via Trados Studio?

    You do not provide enough information to help you. "Trados crashed" is no information.

  • I have been using Trados for 20 years now and have repeatedly found that problems with updates are passed on to individual users. But that's not how it works – at some point, there are so many complaints in the forums that these claims are no longer tenable. Six months ago, I bought a very fast laptop and reinstalled Trados 2024. With no visible success. And Trados crashes. As a user, that's all the information I can provide. How am I supposed to know why?

    This is still no information. I have to guess your OS and where the files are. I have to guess what kind of other software do you use. I even have to guess if you have Mac or Windows. So please provide all information you can and allow us to try to help you. 

    You also did not answer my questions regarding plugins or OneDrive. So either you give us the necessary information or no one will be able to help. Just moaning is not helpful at all.

    Please reset Studio. Delete these folders:

    • C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Trados
    • C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Trados\Trados Studio
    • ...Documents\Studio 2024

    This should bring Studio in neutral state. You will be asked to configure Studio when restarting. Chose one of the default profiles. Do not import any profiles from the previous versions. Same applies to project templates. Recreate these instead of importing. When you start Studio now with a default profile, all your personal settings will be gone, so you will need to adapt them. When done, export this user profile for future use. Next install all necessary plugins via Add-Ins within Studio. You can install the plugins all at once and restart Studio only when finished. Now also all your projects will be gone. You can open them from the Projects view in Studio. When done, in each old project go to Project settings -> File types and perform a reset there. 

    Usually this measures should prevent TS from frequent crashes. As you use the program since more or less the very beginning of its existence, you may know, that TS is not the most stable software in the world. Nonetheless the versions 2022 and 2024 are fairly stable, so 20 crashes a day are indeed far too much. Nevertheless, it is always advisable to press CTRL+S after having performed some changes or confirmed some segments. As your laptop seems to be very quick and equipped with a SSD drive, you can save every few minutes. The autosave is set to 10 minutes by default, but I wouldn't rely on that and save every 2 or 3 minutes by CTRL+S. Especially when revising. I do this always when I run search and replace in review modus for example. It does not take much time and saves me from bad surprises.

  • BTW, in Windows 11 the folder Documents may very well be connected to OneDrive, even if you did not setup this. You can check by right clicking the folder If you see OneDrive in the list, the folder is connected to OneDrive. In that case either store all projects elsewhere or at least use the option "Always keep on this device". Should this option be not visible, it is then hidden under "More options".

  • Unfortunately, I've done that repeatedly as well. It solves some problems temporarily and others only until DeepL, or more recently OpenAI, is reinstalled.

  • I have both, however only DeepL in daily use and no problems whatsoever. Are you sure to use really the latest version of the corresponding plugin?

  • As a developer, hopefully you won't have any problems with your own product. Unfortunately, I have plenty of problems them. Despite reinstalling everything following your instructions, I can't see any notable improvements.

  • How do you come I am a developer? I am a freelance translator, using TS since the version 2009. Before I used Trados starting with the version 3.5. All my knowledge is a result of self study. Being a mechanical engineer I just have a structured way of working. My only connection with the developers is beta testing of the software to help avoiding release problems. 

    Which language do you use Studio in and what is the language of your OS?
