Crashes, crashes and, again, crashes

Trados crashes lots of times without reason, while I'm simply using it with the usual normal functions, simply when I put the cursor in the next segment space, and there is no way to restart it.

Ctrl+Alt+Canc does not work, the program cannot be closed. I am obliged to force my computer's shut down using the power button. No other way.

This may happen several times during a work session. It is VERY annoying. Why is this happening? Could someone fix this?

If you really need to kill Studio, you can call the Task Manager in Windows 10/11 directly by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ESC. Then select the process and chose "close" (or similar, in German it is called "End process"). But this is not the solution to your general problem.

From my experience the first step would be switching the language of Studio to English. Then follow this steps to maybe resolve your problem more reliable:

    • With a file open in Editor, go to View and select "Reset window layout"
    • Restart Studio, do so after each of the steps here
    • Go to File -> Setup -> Manage user profiles and select "Reset user profile"
    • Repeat the first step
    • Go to File -> Setup -> Manage user profiles and select "Change user profile". Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Trados\Trados Studio\Studio18\UserProfiles and select one of the profiles from there. Should you be asked to overwrite an existing profile, confirm and overwrite it.
    • Repeat the first step
    • Go to C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Trados and delete the folder Trados Studio completely
    • Restart Studio. Configure your data and chose the same user profile you loaded in the step before
    • Check the location of your projects you are currently working on. Note this location. Close Studio, Go to Documents\Studio 2024\Projects and rename the projects.xml file to something like _projects.xml. Reopen Studio. From the Projects view (now empty) chose "Open project" and navigate to the location you noted and open the projects one by one

Of course stop after the step which solves the problem, it is then not necessary to go for the next steps here.

Studio should work properly, provided you do not have chaos on your PC. Studio hates chaos.

  • Countermand all!!! It happened again, even with OneDrive paused. Just passing from a translated segment (after saving) to the next, it froze and there's no more move to do to close Trados and restart it. Please HELP!!!

  • Hi ,

Perhaps it's the project you are working on, the fact that you can open the package does not mean there is no corrupted file in it - there can be one, the package can work until you hit again that corruption in the file and Trados might stop working. You did not say if this happens with all packages or all projects, or just this particular one.

Also, you have suggestions from both me and Jerzy on what else to do, you can follow those and see if they help.

I would advice opening a different project to see if Trados behaves the same way, and I suggest also checking the files in this package - you can create an individual project with a source file and use pre-translate and see which of the files in the package creates issues.

  • I work many times on different packages, mostly from the same client, and these crashes happen now and then, randomly, with their files. In the past, it sometimes happened that the problem arose always in 1 file or in 1 specific segment, a few times it was a corrupted file, but mostly it happens randomly and, when I reopen Trados, I just have to reload the last translated segments (which have been regularly saved in the TM) and I can continue working normally. Further crashes may happen in different files (of the package) and/or in different segments and/or with different modalities - e.g., either it freezes (and I have to restart the PC) or it shuts down abruptly but I can reopen it.

The only thing that may be true is that this mostly happens with packages.

Anyway, apart from pausing OneDrive, I am not capable of following the other complicated things suggested by Jerzy... :-((
