SDL Trados Studio 2017 is coming...

Our upLIFT technology will help you translate new segments faster, even when you do not have a Translation Memory match. Studio will now automatically find even more matches for you, so you don’t have to.

The upLIFT technology will also use your trusted resources to help repair fuzzy matches.

    A really good question - I don't know what I would do without my beloved Regex Autosuggest or Web Lookup (not to mention MT engines).
    And this is where my question goes: wouldn't it be easier if MT engines got installed automatically with Studio installation? This would save so much hassle. The same goes with other apps. Couldn't they just be an integral part of Studio?

    Hi Jesse,

    You'll be able to see for yourself soon in the Beta Community. As a developer we'll help you with that put as a heads up any sdlplugins when placed into the appropriate 2017 folder should just work! Depending on what they do there might be a few tweaks... but I have no idea yet. In general your effort should be small. Developers who create installers instead of using sdlplugins will have work to do, but we hope to convince them to do away with the custom installers and use sdlplugins instead. Will have a lot of benefits in the next few moths as you'll find out!

    AdaptiveMT will require a LanguageCloud account and will most likely be based on a similar principle. So you get a certain amount free and then pay for heavier use. This makes it a nice free feature for most Freelancers who generally don't make heavy use of MT, and any that do will find the costs quite acceptable for the benefits they get in return.

    But there will be more complete details in the coming months.

    Well, which ones do you want?  SDL LanguageCloud and Google do get installed automatically with Studio.  Then there are many others, all that require separate paid accounts to use, that are available through the app store.

    There's close to 200 apps already and they're growing.  This is also just what you see on the appstore.  Many companies create their own on a regular basis to help with things specific to the way they work, and integrated into their business systems.  Don't you think Studio would become a little convoluted and bloated if everything was pre-installed and new apps were added with every update?

    MyMemory is one with the custom installer and does not accept just being copied between folders and machines. MT Enhanced however can simply be copied from the Plugin folder on one machine to another one without being installed there and does work. So via this you can use MS.

    But why should we preinstall these for people who might not even want them, and then not install Sunda, Convertus, Systran, Kantan, Verto, Slate, tauyou, Tilde, Iconic, Baidu, Lingenio, iTranslate4.eu.  I think they're pretty simple to install, especially when the developers just use an sdlplugin.  We're going to make all this easier in the next few months too.

    A user could choose the MT engines they want to install during the installation phase. Just a thought - it's not something that is excessively troublesome.
    As for iTranslate4.eu, I believe there's no working plugin for Studio 2015, is there?

    I think if developers use sdlplugins instead of creating custom installers we'll be quite close to your dream very soon.

    iTranslate4.eu - yes you're correct. I think 2011 is the latest version the developer created an app for. But that doesn't mean they won't create an update if they have enough interest from their users. If they don't then this is another very good reason why we should not spend valuable development time building all of these into our product when there is no demand for them in the first place. I think a "pick & choose" approach is more appropriate.

    I made yesterday the same question concerning backward compatibility through the SDL "Live Chat":

    I have just received the E-mail announcing the SDL Studio 2017 release.
    I have an immediate query: will SDL Studio 2017 and SDL MultiTerm 2017 file formats be completely backward compatible with previous SDL Studio/SDL MultiTerm 2015, 2014 and 2011?

    and, among other,, their reply was:

    and

    02:35:14 PM [Claudio] And will the sdlxliff structure change in any way?
    02:35:34 PM [Claudio] I mean file structure when opened with a normal text editor.
    02:36:19 PM [Xxxxx Xxxxxxx] it will still be sdlxliff, for the file structure if there is any change I would need to double check

    So, I suppose that the backward compatibility will be assured.

    I guess the question about compatibility between Studio versions is quite simple to answer: all versions of Studio use the bilingual format SDLXLIFF. As long as this format does not change, you will always be able to open and process these SDLXLIFF files in any version of Studio. The only restrictions are that if you open an SDLXLIFF file that has been created with a file type, which you don't have in your current Studio or which is a newer version of this file type wth new features, you may not be able to preview the document and to generate the target document. But you will always be able to translate the document and deliver a translated bilingual file (leaving the creation of the target to the recipient).
