I can't see tracked changes in imported sdlxliff files

Hello everyone,

I sent some sdlxliff files to an editor. She made some changes using tracked changes and sent them back to me. I replaced my files with her version, which is what I usually do in these cases, but I can't see any of her changes, and the files look exactly as I wrote them.

First I thought my method (replacing my files with hers) was causing the problem, so I created a new project with her files. Nothing, same result.

So I thought she wasn't doing it right, and I asked her to export the files with tracked changes. Those indeed reflect the changes, so I decided to export my files for review and replace them with her files. Nothing, Studio doesn't like that and tells me: this segment was not updated because the content of segment was changed since it was exported for external review.

I'm probably doing something wrong by replacing my sdlxliff files with the edited version, but then what's the best way to import an edited file to accept/reject changes?

Thank you!

Mónica

  • Hi Monica,

Bit of a long shot... but are you sure you have got the correct sdlxliff files? You have files in the source language folder and in the target language folder. You need the ones from the target language folder, and you need to overwrite the ones in the target language folder

  • Yes, I'm sure. I've tried several times, on a couple of different days, just in case my brain wasn't working right. It's very strange, I've done this before with another reviewer and never had a problem.

Since we're in this topic, could you tell me what is the "correct" method to work with files that go to review and come back? What I've done is send the sdlxliff files to review. When I receive the sdlxliff files, I use them to replace my original sdlxliff files in the target language folder of my project while Studio is closed. Then I open Studio and my reviewed files are there.

    Is this the best method?

    Thank you!

  • Hi Monica,

What do you see if you open one of her files directly by double-clicking on the file in Windows Explorer? Can you see the tracked changes then?

Just to make sure the files your editor sent actually contain changes, you could try a quick tool like ChangeTracker (http://change-tracker.com/). I like to use it when someone (usually me) forgets to turn on track changes so I can send a quick overview of what changed to the translator.

And regarding your question about the best method to work with reviewed files, I do the same thing you do when working with the Freelance version of Studio. When using the Professional version, I create a package with any files that need to be sent out for editing, then import the return package back into Studio.

    Best,

  • Hi Monica,

The best way is to use Project Packages as this manages the process for you. But if you just want to send sdlxliff files then the way you're working should be fine.

If you open the files you were sent back, as single document projects, and these also don't show tracked changes then the reason can only be one of these three things:

    1. There are no track changes in the file
    2. You've been sent the wrong sdlxliff in which case 1. also applies
    3. You are not showing track changes in the editor

I can't think of any logical reason for this happening otherwise.

  • Hi Nora, if I open one of her sdlxliff files directly, they don't show any changes. However, she sent me a screenshot of what she sees in her computer and the files actually show the changes. I ended up asking her to export the files for review. She sent me the Word files, and I was able to see the changes there.

I tried generating files for review and replacing them with her files, but Studio wouldn't take them either, saying "this segment was not updated because the content of segment was changed since it was exported for external review."

In the end I had to make the changes manually in Studio (fortunately there weren't many).

It's good to know what I'm doing is not wrong.

    Thank you!
