FAQ for Trados Studio Users

  1. What does our Machine Translation offer to Trados Studio users?
    RWS is now offering a FREE RWS Machine Translation subscription, powered by state-of-the-art Neural Machine Translation technology. The new NMT 2.0 models offer significant improvements in quality over previously available Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) engines.
  2. What do we now offer as standard?
    Trados Studio 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2022 users will now receive a free 500K characters subscription per month. However, since the usage is measured on a 12 months basis starting from the day the subscription was activated, it is possible to use all the allowance of free characters in one month.  If this happens the subscription would be blocked.
    The Machine Translation subscription is available for Trados Studio 2019 and 2021 directly using the Language Cloud integration and also via a Free App available on the RWS Appstore which offers more features than the out of the box solution in Trados Studio.  There are also older versions of the app for Trados Studio 2015 and 2017 but they are no longer supported and are lacking features compared to the current versions.
    For Studio 2019 users, the subscription is also available in in the Language Cloud connector / provider page.
  3. Is the 500K limit for license or per account?
    The 500.000 free characters are per account, and not per license. Usually Freelancers have one license/Freelance subscription, but larger accounts with more licenses will have the same quota.
  4. Why have we moved from Statistical to Neural Machine Translation?
    The market shifted to Neural Machine Translation as it has been proven to provide higher accuracy and fluency over prior techniques. RWS has been at the forefront of machine translation developments and with over 20 years of experience in this field. RWS is using the most modern developments in the field of artificial intelligence to help organizations, governments, Language Service providers and Freelance translators translate content better, faster and with market-leading security.
  5. What will happen to my Adaptive MT engines, can I still use them, what are offering me to compensate?
    Customers who have Adaptive MT engines can continue using them until August 2021, we recommend that you migrate to free Machine Translation NMT for higher quality out of the box. After the End Of Life date, no customers will have Adaptive MT available. All legacy subscriptions will gradually be moved to Trados Cloud Essential. 
  6. What Neural Machine Translation Language Pairs are available today?
    RWS offers the broadest language coverage for commercially available solutions, with new languages added on a regular basis. The language pairs below are built and tested by linguists and use the latest neural machine translation technology.   7. What happens if I exceed the 500K character limit?
    The free Machine Translation subscription is capped at 500K characters. Our sales team would be happy to discuss your particular needs.
  8. What is the difference between a Machine Translation engine and a Machine Translation Model?

    As part of this package, Trados Studio users have access to Generic NMT models. Models is a better (and new) name that will replace the term “engine”. Engine is obsolete and has a different meaning in other products. While we referred to MT engines for SMT, we refer to NMT models when we talk about NMT.

  9. How do I access Machine Translation?
    You can access NMT via your Language Cloud connector / provider. Equally you can choose to use the free app. Only Trados Studio 2019 and 2021 can access the Machine Translation subscriptions via the Language Cloud connector / provider. Please see how to connect to Language Weaver MT in Trados
  10. What is the difference between post-editing NMT and post-editing SMT, what should I look out for?

  11. How do I apply Machine Translation NMT Models?

    You can apply Machine Translation models as you did previously for Language Cloud MT

    In the Cloud-based resources dialog, ensure Machine Translation is selected from the drop-down list.

    Select a Generic – NMT translation model for the language pairs you would like to use.
