Error message "Cannot find central directory" when trying to add file to project

I use SDL Trados Studio 2014 Freelance on a Macbook Air via Parallels.

I recently copied my files onto iCloud Drive due to lack of space. I got an error message saying I had too many files to do this, but the files were transferred to iCloud Drive anyway, however no copies were left on my Mac. I subsequently installed a larger hard disk and used a Time Machine backup to recover my files.

I'm now having constant problems using Studio. The latest one is the above.

Any help much appreciated.

Andy

  • It looks like you screwed up the directories/files locations by the restore... it looks like you restored them to your host Mac OS instead of the guest Windows OS.
I'm afraid you are on your own since no one else than you knows how EXACTLY are/were your files organized. It's your responsibility to understand PERFECTLY what are you doing (unfortunately, the Mac marketing strategy is the exact opposite).
  • I didn't screw up, Apple did since I spoke to a Senior Adviser who told me Time Machine does not restore Parallels in Windows OS, but in Mac OS. He said it's a Parallels issue but of course Parallels say their product is working fine.
I don't understand what you mean when you say I should know EXACTLY how my files are organised. Do you mean I should be able to remember the file structure?! The problem is that the Trados system files and folders no longer exist.
I have one more question. How about if I wipe the Parallels partition completely (having first saved the Trados projects I need to keep on a Windows format external hard disk), and then re-install Windows and Trados. Would that work?
    TIA for your reply
  • In that very situation it really seems your installation in Windows has been screwed up somehow.
Secure all YOUR production files, which means:
    - projects
    - translation memories
    - term bases

Then you can wipe out the partition and reinstall Windows & Studio.
But OTOH I always supposed, virtual machines have the purpose of revealing one from the necessity to reinstall, as you can simply take a fresh copy of such machine after first installation and start from there. At lest this is what I expect from my Virtual Box on Windows. I have a clone of my VM just in case the one used would break. Isn't that possible in Apple?

Well, from my perspective it's you who screwed up, since it should be you who should know how things work and what exactly you are doing (but again, today's computer/software producers and especially in the Apple world are trying to do the exact opposite and convince users that everything "just magically works" with a single click...).

For example, I would personally never believe that Mac backup program (i.e. designed to backup and restore the Mac native environment) would somehow magically restore content of Windows virtual machines...

I'm afraid none of us can really answer your questions since we don't know how exactly were/are your files organized (where did you have your projects, TMs, termbases, etc. stored, how were the paths organized and how were these linked together and/or to the projects, etc.).
This is all your own responsibility.

  • To Evzen.

I know what I'm doing, I'm translating. If It would be nice if you could take a less agressive tone. Take it easy.

Guess what, I've just found out Time Machine DOES restore the Parallels partition PERFECTLY, all you need to do is put in the right settings in Parallels. So maybe your friends at Apple aren't as dishonest as you think. Just BELIEVE. You're supposed to be helping people, not making them feel worse.

Although you are unable to answer my questions, your colleague Jerzy is taking a more positive constructive attitude Take a leaf out of his book. Although I suspect you'll prefer not to.
  • To Jerzy

    Thanks for your confirmation.
The reason I can't use a VM snapshot is I think that the settings I was using on Parallels would probably reproduce the same problem, i.e. restoring in Mac OS instead of Windows OS. I learned this morning that by changing the settings in Parallels it is perfectly possible to restore the VM partition to the Windows OS.
I prefer to wipe everything and start again from scratch.

    Have a great day Jerzy
    bye
  • I'm just trying to point out that everybody is responsible for their environment (and using appropriate settings, for example) in the first place... and that hoping for some miracle coming from outside from someone without a clue about someone else's setup and conditions is just naive.
We had this discussion about "being 'just translator', not computer-person" the other day... the outcome is pretty clear - as soon as one starts using computer as a working tool, one MUST start understanding how computer things work. Knowing the working tools is essential, no matter if it's something as simple as hammer, or a computer.
