I cannot open any file for translation.

I cannot open any file for translation. I follow these steps:
I browse to choose a .doc or .docx file in my directory.
I then get to choose to open for translation only.

The "Translation memory and document parameters" window then opens and the software proceeds to ask me the source and target languages, I choose both and when I click on the "ok" button nothing happens.  I cannot get past this step.

Can anyone help me?

Thank you in advance.

  • Hello Steven,

I found a workaround by opening the file within a project. This feature works fine. If I use the drag & drop menu, I'm still stuck on the "Translation memory and documents parameters" window.

It all started when I couldn't use the real-time translation preview; I got a message that told me the feature was not supported by the version of Word that I am using (Word 2016 with Trados 2017). I read on the forums that it had to do with the .doc expansion not being supported. I fiddled with the word files to switch to .docx and I then got this problem.

Is there any way I can reset the whole installation (it is a recent purchase)?
  • Hi Julien,,

I'm not quite sure of the steps you are taking here.

Can you maybe send a screen shot (swhale@sdl.com) of this or we can set up a remote Webex so I can understand the issues better.

If you have so far only been using the drag and drop option- try using the New Project option and see if you you still have the same issues-

To reset Studio (helps resolve many unexplained problems).

As regards to the preview- this is indeed more than likely linked to your Office version

Let me know if any of this helps.

  • Hello Steven,

Following your screenshot, the problem I had was when I used the "Welcome" tab and then tried to open a file via the drag-&-drop/Browse menu. I chose a file, then a prompt opened and detected the source language; I then chose the target language and tried to click the ok button to proceed but that very button was not working. I still don't know what was causing this but it seems to be working now.
Opening a file while using the "Project" tab is working just fine.
If the problem comes back, I'll use the steps to reset Studio.

Concerning the real-time preview and according to the compatibility matrix, my version of Word (Office 2016) is indeed not supported.
    The page says:

"The SDL Development team are aware of this problem and are working on a solution. Until a permanent solution is in place, follow the workaround described in the Resolution section below."

I thought that by buying a recent version of Office, I'd have access to this feature. It seems that the article has recently been updated. Is there any news of a Workaround for the Real-Time Preview on Office 2016/365?
