Formatting not accessible anymore - SDL Studio 2019

Hi there!
I am having some troubles since the latest upgrade of my Trados Studio 2019. My client sends me packages to translate and when I open it now, the formatting is not accessible anymore and I am not able to export the target text in Word as I usually did. I was hoping somebody could help me with that matter. It may have a simple solution but I can't find it.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Best regards to you all,

Gaëlle

  • Is this just because you are not showing the formatting in the editor?  Go to File -> Options -> Editor and look at the options for displaying tags in the editor while working:

Trados Studio Options menu with Editor settings open, showing various options for displaying tags in the editor. A red arrow points to the 'Formatting display style' section.

  • Hi Paul!

Thanks for your answer. Formatting do appears in the editor but appaears in grey. I can see it but not use it.

  • Are you talking about the icons in the ribbon being greyed out?  If so this may be because the file you are handling does not support this kind of formatting.  Can you share a screenshot?  You can just copy paste an image into the form.

  • To continue here: some documents (xml for example) will not accept any formatting like bold or italics, which was not present in the source.

As translators, we are NOT expected to format any document. Our task is to recreate the source in our target language. So you do NOT have to use any formatting buttons in Studio, but you have to copy the formatting from the source. Even though it might appear to you, that the source text is written in bold, this is not necessarily (quite often it is NOT) the bold button applied there, but a special font is being used. When you add bold with the button from the ribbon, you damage the formatting and the layouter has much more work afterwards with such a document. So this is a very bad habit to use this buttons, unless absolutely necessary - and this is necessary only, if you really must apply formatting and there was no such format in the source.

  • Trados Studio screenshot showing the export option greyed out, indicating it is not available.

Yes, sometimes it's greyed out like in the screenshot. And when it's greyed out, I am not able to export the text in Word as I usually do. (I am sorry my SDL is in french). It seems like both are related. If the formatting is not available, I can't export the target text in Word. I wondered if there is a chance to change it. Slight smile

  • Thanks for your answer but for my kind of texts, I need to change formatting sometimes. Actually, my main problem is that when formatting is greyed out, I can't export my text in Word as I usually do.

  • What kind of error do you get? Not being able to export your text in Word may simply mean, the source was not a Word file, which would also explain why you cannot add formatting.

  • Actually there is no error indicated, it just appears greyed out. The sources are usually PDFs or Words. It's possible that the problem is caused by the source package but I wondered if there is a way to change it anyway.

  • it just appears greyed out

Please bear with me... What does appear greyed out? We do not see what you see and here is nothing greyed out...

  • The formatting options like "italic", "bold" or "underline" are not available. I can see that options on my screen but they appear in grey, I can't use them. And when this happens, I am neither able to export my text in Word as I normally do. I am sorry if my explanations are not very clear, in english it's not so easy lol
