Trados Studio 2022 closing repeatedly

Trados Studio 2022 (pro license) keeps closing unexpectedly and kind of randomly. We tried reinstalling everything, and we got this error message at first:

Error dialog box in French stating 'Impossible de demarrer le service Sdl.Desktop.Platform.CommandBars.IActionService' with options for Knowledge Base, Community, and an OK button.

The program wouldn't open at all, so we followed those instructions: https://gateway.sdl.com/apex/communityknowledge?articleName=000003136

Then the program managed to open, but now it keeps closing after a few segments, and it seems pretty random.

Any ideas about the root cause and a potential fix?

  • Update: Now it's just closing, whatever the file type. Trados closes unexpectedly or freezes, without any error message. Any ideas   or  ?

As I am a heavy user of this software and translate from a small file up to several thousand words in one single file or even more words in several files per project without any such problems, there must be something in your system causing this behaviour.

There are several possibilities which can play a role:

    • PC specs too weak
    • Files scattered all around the place
    • TMs or TBs not updated or reorganized
    • Too big TM
    • Too many TBs in project
    • TMs, TBs and/or files located on a spinning HDD or network or even worse in a cloud
    • Active anti virus software causing problems
    • Outdated operating system
    • Outdated drivers in your computer
    • Even the language of the software and of the OS may influence the behaviour
    • ...

Unfortunately from my personal side I have tried all means I can think of. Sorry.

Error dialog box in Trados Studio with a memory access error message in French, indicating the instruction at a specific memory address could not be read, with an OK button to terminate the program.

This type of error typically arises due to a few common reasons:

    1. Memory Corruption: This might be due to a bug in the Trados Studio application or a problem with your computer's memory (RAM). It can sometimes be caused by hardware issues or defective RAM.  But it it was a bug in Trados I'd expect this to happen to more users... and it's not.

    2. Software Conflict: There may be a conflict with another application or software running on your computer.  This can occur if another application is interfering with Trados Studio's memory allocation.

    3. Outdated or Corrupt Drivers: Issues with your system's drivers, especially those related to graphics or memory, can cause such errors.

    4. Corrupt Installation: Trados Studio itself may have a corrupt installation.  This can happen if the installation files were damaged or if there were interruptions during the installation process.  But presumably you have cleanup and reinstalled already so this is probably not likely either.

    5. Insufficient System Resources: If your system is running low on memory or other resources, it might not be able to allocate enough memory to Trados Studio, leading to this error.

But your environment, from the stack trace, look ok in theory, so I'd do a really thorough clean up of Studio and reinstall before looking at more drastic measure just to try and rule out a Studio issue in your installation.

    Clean install... try the following.

    1. Uninstall Studio
    2. Uninstall MultiTerm

Now manually delete these folders if they are still there (back up your TMs, Termbases, AutoSuggest Dictionaries and Projects first in case you make a mistake):

    c:\ProgramData\Package Cache\Trados\TradosStudio2022\
    c:\ProgramData\Package Cache\Trados\MultiTermDesktop2022\
    c:\Program Files (x86)\Trados\Trados Studio\Studio17\
    c:\Program Files (x86)\Trados\MultiTerm\MultiTerm17\
    c:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Trados\Trados Studio\17\
    c:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Trados\Trados Studio\Studio17\
    c:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Trados\MultiTerm\MultiTerm17\
    c:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Trados\Trados Studio\17\
    c:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Trados\Trados Studio\Studio17\
    c:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Trados\MultiTerm\MultiTerm17\
    c:\Users\%username%\Documents\Studio 2022\Project Templates\
    c:\Users\%username%\Documents\Studio 2022\Projects\projects.xml

I think that's about it for a clean install. Then reinstall and see if this helps.
