Date Localization for Saudi Arabia

Hello, Trados Community,

When translating into Arabic (Saudi Arabia) in Trados, the dates automatically convert to the Hijri Calendar, as shown in the screenshot.

Screenshot of Trados Studio interface showing a translation document with dates in Gregorian format on the left and their automatic conversion to Hijri Calendar on the right.

Is there a way to adjust the settings to keep the Gregorian format, as it does when translating into Arabic (Egypt) (e.g., 1 أغسطس 2024)?

I've explored the "Language Resources" settings, I even tried to create one from scratch, but it seems I can only modify the date format, not the calendar type.

While I'm aware of some workarounds, I'd prefer a solution that eliminates the need for them. Slight smile

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

  • Hello,

I understand that you're looking to keep the Gregorian date format when translating into Arabic (Saudi Arabia) in Trados Studio. While the "Language Resources" settings allow you to modify the date format, they don't provide an option to change the calendar type.

However, you can try the following steps to ensure the Gregorian date format is used:

Step 1: Go to "Project Settings".

Step 2: Navigate to "Language Pairs" > [your language pair] > "Translation Memory and Automated Translation" > "Auto-substitution" > "Dates and Times".

Step 3: Without making any changes, click "OK". This action refreshes the date and time settings and the correct date format should be used afterwards.

Alternatively, you can adjust the date format in your translation memory settings:

Step 1: Go to the settings of your translation memory.

Step 2: Under "Language Resources" > [your target language] > "Dates", ensure that the date format you want to use appears before the date format(s) with the day of the week. You can change the order using the little arrows on the left side of the window.

Step 3: Click "OK" to confirm the settings.

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

    Best regards,

I wonder if the way to address this is through the calendar type in your windows settings?  Trados Studio most likely takes these settings from windows as I don't believe we have options for the calendar type in Trados Studio:

Dropdown menu for 'Calendar type' with various options in Arabic, with the first option highlighted.

  • Thank you for your assistance, . Unfortunately, this solution did not resolve the issue. I changed my region and regional format settings, set the calendar to Gregorian as indicated in the first 2 screenshots, and even restarted my computer. However, not only did this fail to correct the date conversion, but it also created further inconsistencies: Trados retained the Gregorian year and day while converting only the month to Hijri as shown in Screenshot 3, resulting in an incorrect date display (e.g., a nonexistent year 2026 in the Hijri calendar).

    Screenshot 1

Language settings showing English (United States) and Arabic (Saudi Arabia) as installed languages, with the region set to Saudi Arabia.

    Screenshot 2

Date and time settings with calendar format set to Gregorian, showing options for first day of the week, short date, and long date.

    Screenshot 3

Trados Studio segment with a date mismatch error, displaying July 29, 2019, next to a highlighted incorrect date of July 29, 2026.

ok - out of interest did this use Gregorian correctly in previous versions?  I didn't test yet bit perhaps you know?

I have logged this with the support team because I don't know how to help more with this one.  I'll let you know when they come back to me.

I have spoken to Support and It seems that Studio always used the Hijri calendar for Arabic (Saudi Arabia).  The behaviour is the same in Studio 2015.  Support logged an enhancement request for Development (our reference CRQ-40362) so they can consider switching to the Gregorian calendar or adding the option for customers to choose between the two.

So for now your best option would be to choose a different variant if you need the Gregorian calendar.

  • Thank you so much, ! I really appreciate it!

Yes, there is always a workaround, but having the option to choose the calendar type would be great.
