Variable Recognition Failure (EN "Lv.1" → PT "Nv.1") in Trados

Hi team,

I'm translating a document from English to Portuguese.

Trados identified "Lv.1" in the English source text as a variable and flagged it as a repeated item.

However, during actual translation, I couldn’t automatically replace "Nv.1" in Portuguese with "Nv.2" because the Portuguese "Nv.1" was not recognized as a variable.

Question improvement suggestion: Provide specific details about the project settings and any troubleshooting steps you have already taken to resolve the variable recognition issue.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello,

It seems you are experiencing an issue with variable recognition in Trados Studio while translating from English to Portuguese. Here are some steps you can take to address this problem:

**Step 1:** Check your Project Settings

    - Go to Project Settings > Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Translation Memory and Automated Translation.

    - Ensure that the auto-substitution option for variables is enabled. This setting allows Trados to recognize and replace variables automatically.

**Step 2:** Add Variables to Your Translation Memory

    - Navigate to the Language Resources tab and add "Lv.1" and "Nv.1" as variable terms for your source and target languages.

    - After adding the variables, re-index your Translation Memory by going to Performance and Tuning. This step is crucial for the changes to take effect.

    **Step 3:** Verify Variable Recognition

    - Check if "Nv.1" is listed in the Variable List. If it is not, you may need to add it manually.

    - Ensure that the format of the variables is correct, as punctuation issues can sometimes prevent recognition.

**Step 4:** Use Regex for Verification

    - Consider using custom regex in the Verification options to catch any errors in alphanumeric strings during QA. This can help identify why "Nv.1" is not being recognized.

    **Step 5:** Restart Trados Studio

    - After making changes to the settings, restart Trados Studio to ensure that all updates are applied correctly.

If you follow these steps and still encounter issues, please provide additional details about your project settings and any troubleshooting steps you have already taken. This information will help in diagnosing the problem more effectively.
