Bug when translating into Japanese

Hi Team,

As you can see in my image below, the 1st segment was translated as 17%, and I updated my TM.

But When I trying to translate 2nd segment, it showed 17パーセント than 22%.

The TM is a clean new TM, doesn't contain any other segments.

Question improvement suggestion: Provide a clear description of the expected behavior versus the actual behavior, and include any error messages or specific steps taken to troubleshoot the issue.

In the meantime, based on the information you have provided, here is a suggested answer to your question:

    Hello,

It seems you are experiencing an issue with the translation percentages in Trados Studio when translating into Japanese. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

**Step 1:** Verify the Translation Memory (TM) settings. Ensure that the TM you are using is correctly set up and updated. Since you mentioned it is a clean new TM, confirm that it contains the necessary segments for your translation.

**Step 2:** Check the segmentation rules. If the TM is creating two segments from one, you may need to adjust the segmentation rules to prevent this. You can add an exception to the Full Stop rule as suggested in your context.

**Step 3:** Review the translation process. The percentage match can be affected by various factors, including how many files are added to the project and the number of target languages set. Ensure that the translation process is being followed correctly.

**Step 4:** Confirm all segments. Go to the 'Review' tab and click on 'Confirm All' to ensure that all segments are confirmed and saved in the TM.

**Step 5:** If the issue persists, consider running a Batch Task -> Pre-translate to get the latest translation results from the TM. This can help ensure that the TM is up to date with the current translation units.

If you continue to experience discrepancies in the translation percentages, it may be beneficial to check for any updates to Trados Studio that could address known bugs or issues related to TM behavior.

I hope this answer addressed your question. If not, please reject the answer, add the question improvement suggestion information, and click the RWS Community AI checkbox on the right to try again.

I don't know if the AI helped or not as you left it marked as a verified answer... but nonetheless I tested this with a clean TM in 2024 and I get these results:

Screenshot of Trados Studio showing translation results for zh(CN)-ja(JP) with highlighted text '17%' in purple and green, and a file path displayed at the bottom.

    Please confirm the following:

    1. what version of Trados Studio you are using?
    2. what other tools/plugins you are using that could be influencing what you see?  In fact, just what other tools/plugins are you using.

  •

In fact I realised I used the same source for all three segments so did it again:

Screenshot of Trados Studio showing translation results for a segment. The source text is in Chinese, and the target text is in Japanese. The match percentage is 17% in purple text.

    Same, correct result.

  • I don't use Trados 2022, but I have seen a similar report on that behavior either (with Trados Studio 2022 SR1 17.1.6.16252). Try to type the word "percent" instead of the % char for the target segment 1, confirm it and see what happens then. I bet you would get the % character for segments 2 and 3 even though you type "percent" for segment 1. This is not ok too but it happens in most cases. The real weird thing is that on some rare occasions Trados puts the word "percent" in segment 2 and 3 even when you type the % character in segment 1. I have seen only one case reported on such "reverse" behavior.

Scenario 1: When you have three similar segments that mention different values in %, if you type "percent" in the first segment instead of %, the repetitions (segments 2 and 3) would still end up with the % character overriding the word "percent". This happens in 99 cases out of 100.
Scenario 2: When you have three similar segments that mention different values in %, if you type the % character in the first segment, the repetitions (segments 2 and 3) would end up with the word "percent" overriding the character "%". I have seen only 1 report. This one is the second.

Trados Studio interface showing a translation segment with the source text in Chinese and the target text in Russian. Segment 1 uses the word ' ' for 17%, while segments 2 and 3 use the '%' character for 22% and 27%, respectively. The Term Recognition pane indicates 'No open termbase.'

  • I have seen this bug for En>Ru too. Not me but a colleague of mine experienced it. We couldn't find a solution or fix.
Screenshot of Trados Studio showing translation results with highlighted percentages in yellow, including 17%, 22%, and 27%. Cyrillic text is visible in the target translation.

With that in mind, if you put anything else other than % or "percent", say "km", in your target segment 1, this bug would not happen. That means Trados somehow "knows" that the % character and the word "percent" stand for the same concept. But why it replaces one with the other...
And it works like this even if you don't have any TM attached at all. I mean TM has nothing to do with the bug.
Most probably you use Trados Studio 2022 SR1 17.1.6.16252. Update your software to this version: downloadcentercdn.sdl.com/.../TradosStudio2022_SR2_CU12_19268.zip There is no % bug in there.
